As soon as our Carly Rae Jepsen cover was released, the compliments came flooding in. We have yet to see an instance where the “Call Me Maybe” singer doesn’t look stunning—from award shows to red carpet appearances she’s pretty much flawless—but fans old and new were unanimously in love with her hair and makeup from our October 2012 cover. As such, we spoke with Anna Nenoiu, the hair and makeup artist for the shoot, and got all the tips and tricks behind Carly Rae Jepsen’s look.

“Carly brought some of her own ideas, but she was very easy going and left it up to me,” said Anna Nenoiu of the hair and makeup she devised for Carly Rae Jepsen’s FASHION Magazine cover. “Prior to the shoot Gabor [Jurina, the photographer], Zeina [Esmail, the stylist] and I had gone through her previous appearances and we wanted to elevate her look into something in line with who she is—a young, edgy artist—but more ladylike and stylized.” For Jepsen’s hair, this meant keeping her signature bangs but amping up the volume and texture of her naturally wavy style.

After adding in a few extensions for length, Nenoiu separated Carly Rae Jepsen’s hair into two-and-a-half inch sections. Each section was sprayed with TreSemmé Curl Locking Extra Hold Styling Spray ($8, well.ca)—which helped add moisture back into the hair—and then loosely wrapped around Nenoiu’s hand and pinned to Jepsen’s head. Instead of drying the curls with the heat of a blowdryer, it was left to set and dry naturally while Nenoiu got to work on Carly Rae Jepsen’s makeup.

Once the curls were dry, the pins came out and Ninoiu ran a straightening iron through Carly Rae Jepsen’s bangs. “Her edgy, straight bangs are a key element of her look,” she explained. The rest of Jepsen’s hair was also partially straightened—just from the top of her head to her ears—while the beachy waves flowed from jawbone to waist. “It’s a look that’s done, but undone. Good for someone who’s young,” said Ninoiu. A healthy load of TreSemmé Tres Two Extra-Hold Hairspray ($8, well.ca) was applied to finish the look, and to also add extra shine to Carly Rae Jepsen’s hair.

Flawless skin was the first goal when creating the makeup look for Carly Rae Jepsen’s FASHION Magazine cover shoot. Anna Nenoiu started with Armani Luminous Silk foundation in “Ivory” ($66, at Holt Renfrew) though she admitted that Jepsen’s skin was “already pretty perfect.” A light dusting of Cover FX Bronze FX bronzer ($28, sephora.com) was used to contour Jepsen’s cheeks and added definition without making her skin look too overdone.

For Carly Rae Jepsen’s eyes, Nenoiu went with a black-rimmed smoky eye that had both a hard rock edge and the depth and dimension of a high fashion look. She lined Jepsen’s eyes along both the inner and outer lashline with Armani’s Eyes to Kill waterproof eye pencil in “Granite Black” ($29, at Holt Renfrew) and blended it to create the smoky effect. Rich shades of plum, bronze and gold eyeshadow were used from Armani’s Eyes to Kill #1 palette ($65, at Holt Renfrew). “You don’t really see it [in the cover photograph],” Nenoiu explained. “But it helps make her eyes pop.”

A few Shu Uemura flares were added before Nenoiu applied a heavy coat of Essence Get Big! Lashes Volume mascara ($4, at Shoppers Drug Mart). Finally, the look was finished with a neutral lipstick, which helped to balance the makeup. “The [McQ by Alexander McQueen] dress required a nude lip so it’s not overdone,” explained Nenoiu, citing the rule of doing either a heavy eye or a heavy lip—but not both. For the lips, she used Armani Rouge d’Armani lipstick in “Nude” ($38, at Holt Renfrew). A similar colour was applied to Carly Rae Jepsen’s nails, care of OPI nail polish in “Don’t Pretzel My Buttons” ($11, nailpolishcanada.com).
