Donald Mowat spent his childhood in the dark of Montreal’s movie theatres, transfixed by the “painterly look” of period pieces. He initially thought costume design was his calling, but soon realized his talent lay with makeup. His film credits include Planet of the Apes and The Fighter—the latter is our favourite for his transformation of Melissa Leo and the girls playing her seven scrappy daughters. He’s also the exclusive artist for Mark Wahlberg, who values Mowat’s skill with the male visage.
