In 1985, Frank Toskan and Frank Angelo, a makeup artist and hair salon owner respectively, founded Make-up Art Cosmetics (M.A.C), a collection developed to stand up to the heat of studio lights. Toskan cooked up prototypes at his kitchen table in Toronto with the help of his brother-in-law and a high school chemistry textbook, and handed them out to his network of artistic friends. Word travelled fast; by 1995, the brand was distributed internationally and Estée Lauder was part-owner. Now a global force, the company has raised more than $250 million for its M.A.C AIDS Fund through its Viva Glam collections.
