Introducing Beauty Panel: See how 11 Canadian beauty bloggers apply their makeup for an everyday, go-to look
It didn’t seem fair to let Style Panel have all the fun—and that’s why we’re excited to announce the debut of the FASHIONmagazine.com Beauty Panel. We’ve asked a select group of talented Canadian beauty bloggers to share their hair and makeup know-how with our readers through photo and video tutorials. In turn, you’ll be able to ask the Beauty Panel your biggest beauty questions—from how to perfect cat-eye liner to mastering a sock bun—and see the results each week.
To kick things off, we’ve asked each of the 11 inaugural Beauty Panel bloggers to share their go-to, everyday makeup look. You’ll get a feel for each girl’s personal style and learn up some helpful makeup tricks along the way. After all, it’s important to master the basics before you move on to more advanced techniques!

When it comes to everyday makeup, it’s often a case of making yourself look polished without appearing too overdone. The “no makeup makeup” look, if you will. While some Beauty Panelists, like The Burgundy Book’s Rema Benallal and Arianne de Guzman of Glitter Geek, like to add a pop of colour with a bright lip for their everyday look, others chose to make it all about the eyes. Michelle Mullins from LipstickRules shows you how to keep it simple with a selection of neutral shadows and Bold n Beautiful Makeup’s Janella Panchamsingh takes everyday to the next level with a shimmering selection of shadows.
The other important aspect of an everyday makeup look is ensuring you start with a great base. For Tess Lopez of Makeup By Tess this means loading up on the moisturizer. Primer is also key—with most of the panelists advising you to apply it to both your eyelids and face. And once the base is prepped, you’ll want to ensure your everyday makeup looks good all day long. Alicia Gilby of Funny Face Beauty likes to keep the dewy, hydrated look going strong with a cream blush and champagne highlighter.

When it comes to my everyday makeup, I have one rule: keep it simple. My ultimate goal is to look polished and fresh–even on the busiest of days. For me, my everyday look revolves around my lipstick (naturally!). Whether I choose a bright pink lipstick or a more understated nude colour, I tend to keep the rest of my makeup minimal. I use the smallest amount of foundation to cover up any redness on my face, and concealer to cover darkness under the eyes. I then set the foundation with M.A.C Mineralize Skinfinish Natural, buffing in with a small kabuki brush. For my eyes, I prime my lids first with Too Faced Shadow Insurance to help keep my makeup in place all day. As for colour, I prefer wearing neutral shades like the ones from Urban Decay’s Naked Palette 2. I sweep on a soft champagne shade like “Bootycall” across the lid and up to the crease, and then use a darker taupey-brown shade, like “Tease,” in the crease. I line my eyes with a black or brown gel liner such as Annabelle’s Smudge Paint in “Tar.” I always curl my lashes with Shu Uemura’s infamous eyelash curler and then top it off with a few good coats of mascara. My current favourite is Maybelline The Colossal Volume Express. On my cheeks, I like to highlight the top of my cheekbones first by dabbing the product on the highest part of the cheekbone and then blending it in. For cheek colour, I tend to reach most for peachy pink or neutral shades like Tarte Amazonian Clay Blush in “Exposed.” To apply, I dip my fluffy blush brush into the product, tap any excess, and use the side of the brush to gently sweep colour on my cheekbones. I tend to apply lightly as it’s easier to build up colour than to have to try and remove. My favourite part of the whole process—and the final step—is lipstick. My lip colour changes daily but for a fool-proof and professional look, I like soft neutral pinks such as M.A.C Cosmetics Ultra Darling lipstick. That’s it! Easy, peasy everyday look that I can wear to the office and running around with the kids.

One of my favourite everyday looks is the cat-eye. It’s chic and yet simple enough to wear on a regular basis. I start by applying an eyeshadow primer to makeup sure everything stays in place, even if it’s just an eyeliner. I then apply my favourite gel-liner from the centre of my eyelid to the outer corners of my eyes. After that I draw towards the inner corners of my eyes. Since I have tapered eyelids, I prefer to make my eyeliner as thin as possible until it reaches the outer corners. Then I create a triangle that rejoins the eyeliner from the outer corners of my eyes. The length and the size depends on the kind of inspiration you want to give your final makeup look. After applying a generous coat of mascara on my upper and lower lashes, I then use my favourite eyelash adhesive with a pair of false lashes. Since this look doesn’t require any eyeshadows, I like to use a bolder blush colour and paired with a nude lip colour to balance everything out. I set everything with my favourite makeup fix and I’m ready to go!

With cold, harsh, winter weather comes dry, flaky and very dull-looking skin. It is for that reason that my “go-to everyday look” is what I like to call “simple and glowing.” As with any makeup look, the first and most important step is achieving a flawless base. To ensure that my dry skin doesn’t look ‘flaky’ or ‘cakey,’ I like to use a thin liquid foundation and a light-toned liquid concealer to even out skin tone and hide redness. Rather than use a powder blush, which can stick to and emphasize dry patches, I prefer to use a cream blush, which gives the cheeks a fresh, dewy glow. To add even more radiance to the face, I use a gorgeous champagne highlighter on top of my cheekbones and down the centre of my nose. In keeping with the simple and glowing theme, I use a rose gold eyeshadow base, two shimmering champagne eyeshadows (the lighter shadow goes on the inner half of the eye, while the darker goes on the outer half), lots of black, lengthening mascara and a light swipe of brown eyeliner on the lower waterline. To combat dark circles, I use a light liquid concealer and liquid highlighting pen to brighten the under eye area. To finish the look, I use a nude-toned, tinted lip balm, as well as a moisturizing, plumping gloss to combat dry chapped lips, which also makes them appear fuller and very glossy.

My everyday look is what I’d call my bare minimum to look presentable at work. It takes me five minutes to do on hectic mornings, after hitting the snooze button five times too many. I start by buffing in a pressed mineral foundation all over my face with a flat kabuki brush. I then go in and conceal my dark circles and blemishes. I use a peach toned corrector first, then go over that with a concealer that matches my skin. I like to use my fingers to blend out the products. Because my undereye area need a lot of help, I go back and brighten with a light-reflecting pen. I place the product on the inner half of the undereye area, the outer corner and on my brow bone. I feel naked without filling in my brows, and it’s an absolute must if I only have two minutes to get ready. I like to use a waterproof formula so it lasts even after my workouts. Next, I curl my lashes and then I apply a mascara that is volumizing and holds a curl. My lipstick choice changes daily, and today I like this cheerful red to brighten up my face. I use my finger to put it on as a stain, so it’s not as high maintenance as a crisp bold lip.

I always start off with a moisturized face. Then I darken my brows using light strokes with a smudge resistant eyebrow pencil. Next, I drag liquid liner along my lash line and wing it out. love Milani Eye Tech Extreme Liquid Eye Liner because it has a good grip and makes a perfect line every time. I apply a gold pencil inside your inner eye corners—this helps to open up my eyes and make them look brighter. When I apply mascara, I always apply it first at the roots of my lashes for added volume. I let this dry and then do a second coat, covering from root to tips. And last but not least, I apply a sheer hot pink lipstick to complete the look.

My everyday look is one that makes me feel put together but not overdone. It may seem like a lot of steps especially in the mornings but I’m so used to it that I now have it down to a science! The most time consuming step, however, is the first one: to even out my skin. Since I still experience break outs and have a lot of discolouration this is not a step I skip out on. First, I use a damp sponge (all water squeezed out!) to apply a full coverage foundation or BB cream. I start out light and build as needed. Next, I apply a lightweight concealer under the eyes, using a formula that won’t emphasize any creases or lines. I prime my eyelids before doing eye makeup—an important step if your lids are oily like mine. With a fluffy eyeshadow brush I sweep on an eyeshadow that is slightly darker than my skin tone, applying it all over the lids and through to the crease. With a flat brush I press a darker shadow (like grey or dark-blue) along my upper lash line, concentrating the colour on the outer corners of my eyes. Taking the fluffy brush again, I blend the darker shadow at the outer corner up into the crease. I curl my lashes before applying eyeliner to get closer to the lash line as possible. Then I use a gel or cream liner and an angled brush to apply liner along upper lash line. I also apply some product to my lower lash line to darken it slightly. (Smudge out or correct any mistakes with a cotton swab!) Finally, I set my foundation in place with translucent loose powder and apply bright pink powder blush. I brush my brows into place and finish my eyes with mascara. And I always choose a lipstick to suit my mood; my choice lately is a soft mauve shade.
