From matte to two-toned to ombré, the Beauty Panel embraces fall’s textured lipstick trend

Textured Lip for fall 2013

This season lips are getting a high dose of drama. Those simple few swoops of classic brights in the summertime have transitioned into multifaceted, textured looks for fall. From layering sharp colours with other shades to playing with matte and stain finishes, the Fall 2013 runways introduced many new ways to embrace—and apply—lipstick.

We saw textured lips make a big statement on the runway at Lanvin, with a matte berry-toned lip being the perfect pop to an almost bare face. Over at Kenneth Cole, makeup artists layered lipsticks for an on-trend ombré effect. And don’t forget your favourite dark shades: Dolce and Gabbana had models pouting a deep burgundy shade while Holly Fulton took the classic red to another level by lining it with a maroon liner.

Challenge 32: Texture is in for lips this fall with everything from stained smears to two-tone looks trending. How are you reinventing the way you wear lipstick this season? See the answers now! »

Our Beauty Panel, which welcomes three new members this week, took to the challenge of tweaking their lipstick routine to embrace this texture trend. Newcomer Amy Mckissock of The Pretty Vain channeled Kenneth Cole’s ombré runway look by using a bright red lipstick and fading in a blackened-cherry shade at the corners. Going for the stained lip, Kelly Freeman of Glitter Diaries shows how simple it is to create that intentionally smeared look—without looking messy. Also loving the ombré trend is Marilou Moles of Twenty York Street, who used two shades of pink to create her too-cool-for-school look.

One of the easiest ways to incorporate the textured lip look into your beauty routine this fall is by creating an ombré effect, such as the one seen in the Kenneth Cole show. The transition from a bright red at the center of the lips to a blackened-cherry at the outer corners is not only gorgeous, but is also surprisingly easy to re-create within minutes.

To re-create this look you simply need to apply you favourite red lipstick all over your lips to create an opaque base. I chose M.A.C “Red Racer,” however any long-lasting red shade will suffice. I then began to layer on two plum lipsticks with different variations of pigmentation to the outer corners of the lips with a lip brush to create the ombré effect. To ensure this transition was flawless I first applied the lighter shade, Revlon ColorBurst Lipstick in “Plum,” before adding depth with Rimmel Lasting Finish by Kate in “04.” The end result is a more commercial version of the lips seen at the Kenneth Cole show, perfect for an evening on the town.

Intentionally smeared lips aren’t as difficult as you think they are to create! I made this look very simple for anyone to replicate and went with a ’90s grunge theme—a sexy, stained/smeared lip just called for it! For my eyes, I went with a pale lid and added a bit of bronze below the lower lash line for a grunge look, which left the lips as the main focal point. I actually only used one lip product to create this effect but the trick was a lot of layering! I applied the deep berry balm stain to my lips and then blotted the outer edges and then repeated that a few more times to get the final result.

Products used: Marcelle BB Cream, Benefit Erase Paste, Benefit Blush in “Dallas,” It Cosmetics Your Brows But Better in “Universal Transforming Taupe,” Pixi Eye Glow Cube in “Lucent Lid Light,” Annabelle Le Big Show Mascara and Revlon Just Bitten Kissable Balm Stain in “Crush”

This week’s challenge is perhaps one of my most fave. It’s easy to execute yet the effect is so understated glam. One of the key step is lining up the lip to prevent bleeding. This is one look that you can either use two colours of lipstick to create a textured ombré effect, use a completely different shade of lip liner than your actual lipstick or you can use one and slightly dab the colour on your mid lip with a blot of tissue paper, which is what I’ve done here. The effect? A too-cool-for-school, devil may care attitude lips that is oh so fabulous!
