New York Fashion Week Spring 2013 backstage beauty: Big brows at Thakoon, dripping nails at Prabal Gurung and Peter Som proves rainbow-coloured hair is still going strong
While the trend so far at New York Fashion Week has been minimal makeup that wasn’t the case at Peter Som. For starters, rainbow-hued extensions (dyed the day prior by colourist Aura Freidman) were tucked randomly in hair, styled by Eugene Souleiman. On the face, Tom Pecheux also wanted randomness and he used his finger tips to apply colour on the eyes, with the goal of looking like a child’s painting. Finally, you know how we feel about French manicures at FASHION. (If not, let me bring you up to speed: ewww!) But when done right (i.e., no acrylics and no white, squared off tips) we can get behind the style. A perfect exception-making example: the creamy orange and mint combo that used two out of the three shades from Zoya’s custom nail polish range for Peter Som.

Walking through the poorly lit and totally creepy cavern that is Pier 57 to get to to the backstage area for Prabal Gurung really set the tone for his dark beauty theme. Paul Hanlon flattened hair to the head for a Sissy-Spacek-in-Carrie effect and ghostly complexions came courtesy of Charlotte Tilbury. She used pearalized creams on the skin to create an ethereal glow and contoured cheeks for a hollowed out look. To top it all off there were the awesome blood drop nails—the “blood” being a Sally Hansen shade appropriately dubbed “Angel Bite.” And finally, this is sure to be one of my top moments from New York Fashion Week: while backstage Prabal Gurung himself tapped me on the shoulder. “Excuse me, can you please take a picture of us?” he asked. I’m not entirely sure if the picture of Prabal Gurung and his friend turned out, since my hands were shaking the entire time.

Butterfly motifs and bird prints were the inspiration for Thakoon’s Spring 2013 collection and Nars lead artist Diane Kendal translated that into a beauty look that was all eccentric brows and flushed cheeks. Odile Gilbert used a triple barrel curling iron to make waves that echoed—wait for it—the bars of a birdcage. (This is why we love beauty!) After freaking out over that for a minute, I wandered around looking for manicurists wielding bottles of nail polish, but to no avail. Turns out nails were ignored apart from good buffing.
