Toronto Fashion Week Spring 2013 backstage beauty: Double braids and graphic blue liner at Jean-Pierre Braganza

If you’ve been working on your braiding skills, good news! The popularity of plaits will continue through Spring 2013—however the variation shown at Jean-Pierre Braganza brings a whole new level of complexity to the style. Featuring a stark middle part and two braids—one interior, one exterior—the double look was described as “pretty, but weird at the same time” by Pantene Pro-V consulting stylist Justin German. After prepping the hair with Pantene Pro-V Normal to Thick Straighten and Smooth Crème ($6, at drugstores) he separated a section of hair at the crown for the interior cornrow braid, which ran down the back of the head. Then, the rest of the hair was pulled back and French braided overtop the cornrow. The ends of both braids were joined together and secured at the nape of the neck in a ponytail, while the French braid was loosened and pinned so it would cover only the bottom half of the cornrow. “From the front it looks pretty natural,” German explained. “We left a couple bits [of hair] in the front that will fly up when [the models] walk.” While the double braid may seem complicated, Justin German offered an adaptation for at home: Instead of a cornrow, just do a normal braid. “Once you connect it with the other braid it will fall flat aways,” he advised.
Of course, braids weren’t the only multiples happening backstage at Jean-Pierre Braganza. The makeup focused on a “super catty” cat-eye made up of layers of black and blue lines. Cover Girl makeup pro Greg Wencel described the look as “Andy Warhol-esque” and said it reflected the graphic, structured nature of the collection. In order to master the multi-lined cat-eye, Wencel started with the blue line, using Cover Girl Eye Enhancers 3-Kit Shadow in “Blazing Blues” ($7, at drugstores) first and then setting it with Cover Girl Smoky ShadowBlast in “Tempest Blue” ($9, at drugstores). Next he used Cover Girl LineBlast 24HR Liquid Liner ($12, at drugstores) to outline pulling outwards from both the inner and outer corners of the eye—but making sure to keep the lines disconnected from each other. Much like the double braid, the graphic cat eye may seem complicated for at home, but Greg Wencel was quick to offer an easy tip: “Scotch tape! Put it down, trace against it and pull it off.”
