Side parts hair parting

What’s in a hair part? A whole lot, according to the Spring 2013 runways. Celia Ellenberg reports.

To part, or not to part? That was the question that many coiffing stars seemed to be asking themselves this season as deep side parts, centre parts and no parts at all gave equally convincing performances on the spring runways. Why all the deliberate differentiation? “When I choose the part for a designer at a show or on a shoot—whether it’s a side or centre part, clean or messy—I always think about the character we’re conveying, the identity of the brand and every other little detail,” says Redken creative consultant Guido Palau. What do you do to celebrate a 15-year career as one of Britain’s leading fashion designers? If you’re Matthew Williamson, you collaborate with Benefit Cosmetics to create a limited edition makeup kit, that’s what! The exclusive-to-Sephora set, titled The Rich is Back, contains a selection of eyeshadows, a mascara, a cheek powder and a lip gloss. Though Williamson prefers a more natural look at his shows, the range of shades chosen for the Benefit kit allows for both a casual and daring look.

In seeking inspiration for the makeup kit, Matthew Williamson explored his print archive and chose vibrant shades reminiscent of ’70s cocktail parties and hedonistic discos. “This high-octane makeup kit encapsulates some of my favorite iconic prints and the fun-loving, light-hearted spirit of the Benefit girl,” Williamson said via press release. The designer, who is widely know for his obsession with colour, chose a bright kaleidoscope print with peacock feathers and pink flowers for the makeup kit’s packaging.

Who doesn’t love a good change? Two of the music industry’s top talents, Demi Lovato and Carly Rae Jepsen, certainly enjoy switching things up—both popstars debuted radically new hair colours last night and we absolutely love the results.

First up: Demi Lovato. She’s ditched her raven locks for a delightful shade of honey-blonde. (Lovato showed off her new hair colour yesterday evening, when she was honoured for her charitable work at the National Children’s Mental Health Awareness Day.) Although we’ve seen her go blonde before, this time around the the X Factor judge paired the colour change with a shorter cut. Together, the new colour and cut has a very sophisticated look and it paired beautifully with her all-white ensemble at the ceremony. Read more »

Self-tanner seems like a serious challenge for someone as fair as myself. What can I do to build up some believable colour on my body?
There are so many iterations of self-tanner out there—Sprays! Mousses! Creams!—yet it can definitely be a bit of a challenge to find a self-tanner that will work for fairer skintones. If you’re apprehensive about committing to a faux tan since you’re more translucent than not (blame winter—we all do), try a gradual sunless tanner, such as St. Tropez Tanning Essentials Everyday Gradual Tan for Body in “Light/Medium” ($38, sephora.com). Not only will this lotion moisturize your skin with aloe vera, but it will provide a slight golden tint to your skin that will develop over time with 70 per cent less of the tell-tale self-tanning smell than standard self-tanners—meaning you won’t mind slathering this on daily to build up a glow without any of the sun’s harm! Punk has never been so hotly debated. Ever since the Met Gala red carpet ended last night, anyone who’s a fan of fashion—and has a Twitter account—has shared their opinion on who interpreted the punk theme the best and who did it the worst. (Want to see all our best dressed picks? We have a full Met Gala 2013 style gallery up here.)

For hair and makeup, some stars took the Met Gala—and its theme, based on the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s new PUNK: Chaos to Couture exhibit—as reason enough to let loose and go all out. (Though Miley Cyrus probably doesn’t need such literal prompting!) You’d think after attending months of award shows with well-dictated dress codes that many A-listers would embrace the Met Gala as a chance to try something new. January Jones did: “I love to step outside the box,” she said of her braided hair and slick, black makeup, which was inspired by Siouxsie Sioux.

While there were certainly some gorgeous hairstyles and classic beauty looks on the Met Gala red carpet, let’s celebrate those who went beyond the cat-eye liner, red lip or sleek updo. From Elle Fanning’s tie-dyed, watercolour eyes to Cara Delevingne’s mock side-shave hair, here’s who we think had the best Met Gala beauty looks. Read more »
