jul09bodyshop

Normally I would order my mineral makeup online and have it shipped from the States, but I have recently discovered The Body Shop’s (The Centre 3510 – 8th Street East, 306-477-5515, thebodyshop.ca) new Nature’s Mineral line (from $13). Read more »

Calgary: Smyth & Kang becomes a haven for homegrown fashion

If you’ve been counting your fashionable pennies these days, you’re not alone.  I too have been weighing purchases before taking the plunge, neatly stowing away my impulsive self until this ghastly recession comes to a screeching halt. Ummm…when is that going to happen again? For me, going low budget doesn’t mean shunning designer wear altogether.  In fact, I’ve decided to take a long-term view and avoid the bargain that never gets worn and invest in some workhorse pieces.

So, no better time for Calgary’s latest fashion duo, Leon Kang and Aly Velji to transform their cutting-edge boutique Smyth & Kang (610 1st St. S.W., 403-617-2406, smythandkang.com). And we’re not talking a simple facelift. Read more »

Like a shoe paparazzo, Toronto’s beloved Tommy Ton of Jak & Jil captures some of the world’s most beautiful heels in action. Zillions of women devotedly visit the site to catch glimpses of the worldly lives these shoes lead. If you are a footwear cyber-gawker you’ve probably noticed a new breed of heels has been on the streets over the last few years. Remember the gun heels by Chanel? The tea cup and Baroque heels from Miu Miu or the Balenciaga Sportiletto? Not only are the silhouettes outrageously sculptural, the new shoes have also reached obscene heights–last fall, Christian Louboutin told The Wall Street Journal that he was planning on releasing an 8-inch platform this year. Down the open back of one dress, a waterfall of hard drive platters and spindles spill along the model’s spine. On another, vinyl records make up a dramatic, bell-shaped skirt. Anti-slip fabric folded into box pleats puffs out below a bodice of cassette tape on a third cocktail dress, and a fourth, fifth, sixth and seventh pull together even more shiny bits, from silver-sprayed Christmas tree light bulbs to strips of film and strings of CDs. These are the ingenious creations hatched from week one of Off the Cuff, a fashion competition and runway show that has taken its inspiration from Project Runway and found its home in Halifax’s Argyle Fine Art gallery (1869 Upper Water St., 902-425-9456). Guelph: Hippie chic at Hillside

It’s about that time–the time where a year of twisting dreadlocks and healing body tattoos finally pays off: Guelph’s own Hillside Festival (www.hillsidefestival.ca) is just a week away, and what is arguably the best part about summertime in Guelph is about to take over the city.

The 25-year-old festival sells out every year within hours of the box office opening, regardless of the fact that the performers aren’t announced for months later. Between July 24 and 26 the downtown will empty out as everyone and her second cousin heads out to the island on Guelph Lake. Read more »
