The perfect bike for a sweet summer ride

jul09lilacbike_lg

On a sparkling sunny day, there’s really no better feeling than sailing around the leafy city backstreets on two wheels, skirt cheekily billowing in the self-created breeze. (Hair smushed by a helmet, of course.) A bike can be utilitarian and sporty, it can be squeaky and tortuous to ride uphill, like the cute vintage ’70s models—or it can be a dream to ride and a thing of great beauty, like this GranTurismo Donna cruiser by Italian company Abici. Khaki cool lands at Gap today

sum09cfdagap1_lg

Khakis cool? Alexander Wang says so. The designer is one of a trio of promising names who have created pieces for the third round of Design Editions, the CFDA/Vogue Fashion Fund’s partnership with Gap. Wang, winner of the 2008 prize, joins the runners-up, Brooklyn’s Vena Cava and milliner Albertus Swanepoel, in cooking up micro collections in that Gap holy of holies. The collections hit stores today, hot on the heels of last night’s CFDA Awards where Wang took home the Swarovski Award for Womenswear. Read the rest of this entry »

Coco attacks New York with a microphone

Photography by Peter Stigter

Back in February the fashion blogerati were all chattering wildly about the newly (and now no longer) redheaded Coco Rocha gunning around New York Fashion Week wielding a mic. The Canadian mannequin was on assignment for E! Canada, chronicling her life during fashion’s holy week and interviewing a barrage of personalities. The results, Coco Rocha Fashion Attack NYC, which airs tonight at 10 p.m. EST on E! (check your local listings), are an hour-long chronicle of model mayhem—makeup at DVF, a fitting at Michael Kors, agent meetings and house parties. Read the rest of this entry »

Ashley Rowe is quickly becoming the go-to designer for cool girls on the event circuit. You don’t have to look too hard to see someone sporting one of her Miss Rowe signature bustiers or modish mini-dresses.

For the next two Saturdays (June 13 and 20, missrowe.com), the designer is hosting a customization event at her studio in the Toronto Fashion Incubator’s Exhibition Place home (285 Manitoba Dr., Pod 3). During a 30-minute appointment, you can choose your favourite style—an A-line top or dress, bustier or bustier dress—and Rowe will help you put together your dream piece. Neon revival

They say if you lived through a trend the first time, don’t do catch on the second round. That’s probably true, but despite attending high school in prime neon years, I’ve developed a bit of the fashion victim’s addiction to this season’s sporty incarnation. Read the rest of this entry »

Mango celebrates the second edition of El Botón

From left: Leigh Lezark, a look from Mango's Fall 2009 collection and singer Solange Knowles

Knowing not a word of Spanish, I assumed the gilded words “El Hangar” on the Mango gala invite meant the whole glittering shindig would go down in a Barcelona airport hangar.

Not quite: the location of the Oscar party (that would be the jury chairman and too-charming host of this year’s El Botón-Mango Fashion Awards, Oscar de la Renta, not the little gold man) was in Mango’s BCN headquarters. To fete the second incarnation of the awards, the warehouse was transformed into an amber-lit hive of fast-fashion festivity, all champers and ciggies and swift kisses on both cheeks. The international jet set was in full force, so in that respect it was a sort of hangar, after all (and never mind all the overbronzed hangers-on).
