Jamie Salé, natural beauty

feb10jamesale_lg

Eight years ago, Jamie Salé and David Pelletier took Olympic gold for their long program in pairs figure skating—and here’s betting no one’s forgotten the scandal surrounding their medal. Now, though, they’re in Vancouver for the 2010 Games, and in between commentating on her sport for CTV, Salé sat down with me to discuss her new role as spokesperson for famed au naturel line, Burt’s Bees (burtsbees.ca). Olympic-style celebrations at the Opus hotel

After meeting all their fans on Saturday at Holt Renfrew (holtrenfrew.com), Dean and Dan Caten headed to Opus hotel (opushotel.com), where the Dsquared designers hosted a cocktail party with M.A.C Cosmetics, whose makeup artists were responsible for all the brilliant looks on stage at the opening ceremony. Here, some of the lovely faces at the evening’s event.

Holts throws an Olympic bash for Dean and Dan

feb10dsquaredtorch6_lgMy first week covering the 2010 Winter Games for FASHION was filled with several fashionable appearances courtesy of Dean and Dan Caten of Dsquared. First, there was their torch relay in North Van, and on Saturday, I met up with the twins again as they signed autographs at Holt Renfrew (holtrenfrew.com). A huge line awaited the boys (I’ve never seen so many people in the men’s department!), but they were gracious enough to give me a few minutes before meeting their fans. The free gift of yoga at the Olympics

feb10mtcashmere3_lgMy yoga instructor prefaces every class with a standard “this is not a competition” spiel, but honestly, given how enthusiastic we Vancouverites are about our downward dogs, I’m surprised it’s not an official Olympic sport.

Dsquared’s Dean and Dan ran with the Olympic torch–wearing tuxedos, no less–earlier today in North Vancouver. See photos from the run.

Tie one on: A low-key (and luxe) approach to Olympic pride

feb10mtcashmere2_lg

Most of the Olympics wear I’ve seen thus far has been bursting with country colours, stripes, or logos, which is why this more subdued scarf by Mount-Cashmere ($250, mountcashmere.com) is a refreshing alternative.

The lingerie is in the mail

feb10pantypost_lg

Let’s face it: February is bound to be an absurdly hectic month for female Vancouverites. Whether it be work, school, family, socializing, or involvement in Olympic festivities, squeezing obligatory Valentine’s beauty routines into our calendars seems like a stretch (manis and pedis and waxing, oh my!). So where does lingerie and sweetheart shopping fit in? Answer: It probably doesn’t. Luckily, Panty by Post (pantybypost.com) offers a subscription ($155) that gets you an adorable new pair of skivvies once a month for the entire year-a cute gift for any gal, or, if you need something for your fella‚ try the new Briefs in a Box bamboo eco-package (one pair a month for two months for $45).

Vancouver: YEW serves up Olympic burgers, salads and a winners-only cocktail

feb10mtcashmere1_lg

It’s a no-brainer that ceremonies, celebrations and cocktails belong together, and there’s no better place downtown to get a little boozy than at YEW Restaurant + Bar at the Four Seasons Hotel (791 W. Georgia St., 604-689-9333, fourseasons.com/vancouver). A new Olympics-themed menu includes a meant-to-be-shared, one-pound of beef burger (plus fixings) and an Olympic Salad made with rings of grilled squid, anelli pasta, radish, leeks, and crispy shallots, all best supplemented by equally-festive cocktail concoctions. Stocking up at the Bay’s Olympics superstore

feb10Volympics2_lg

I’ve been on the Olympics bandwagon since we landed the bid in 2003, but now that I’ve been seeing the official team apparel all over Vancouver, I decided it was about time I headed to the Olympics superstore at the Bay downtown (674 Granville St., 604-681-6211, hbc.com) to pick up my own pieces. After my initial shock at the madness (So! Many! People! Shopping! Everywhere!), I found the signature mittens ($10)—the maple leaf on each palm is so freaking cute—and picked up the hand-knit sweater that I first laid eyes on back when we featured it in our November issue. Here are highlights from the collection—and don’t forget that they ONLY accept Visa or cash (not even my good ol’ bank card!).

Heading to Vancouver for the Games? Here’s a full deck of places to eat and shop

feb10vancouvermaps_lg

With just 11 days to go, Vancouver’s ready for the Olympics (I hope, anyway), and the visitors are starting to trickle in. Of course, said visitors will be looking for things to do, see, and eat—after all, Olympic athletes are known for being fast, meaning those ticketed events will hardly take up 24 hours of one’s time! How handy, then, that the Travellers Deck (travellersdeck.com) recently landed on my desk. Read the rest of this entry »
