Sharlene Chiu’s FASHION + music pick: “Real Love” by Delorean

Comments

Everything about Delorean screams summer to me. As I’m writing this on yet another rainy day in Toronto, I’m finding a sunny escape with a recent 3D video produced by Pitchfork for the Spanish four-piece’s track, “Real Love”, off their incredibly fun album Subiza. Subiza was one of my favourite albums of last year and its poppy combination of 90s techno and Italian house with Singer/bassist Ekhi Lopetegi’s alluring accented vocals still makes this a standby album to play before a big night out. I’ve only watched the 3D cut of “Real Love” sans glasses but it’s still a wonderful ride to watch as the song plays along a dancing astronaut bouncing through the streets of New York. If this doesn’t get you dancing, I don’t know what will!

Katy Perry is taking her brand of high-energy, high-camp, high-gloss pop on the road.

of our cover girl Katy Perry »

Katy Perry is trying to find a delicate way to describe a nightmare she’s been having lately. She’s singing in front of thousands on her massive California Dreams 2011 World Tour when she suddenly discovers that the audience is getting more of a show than she had intended. “I don’t have part of my costume that I need,” she says cryptically, “so I feel exposed.” We get it, Katy; you’re flashing your fans. She laughs. “And then sometimes I dream that I put on my guitar and I don’t know how to play anymore. It’s like I don’t know how to do anything!” The California-born pastor’s daughter lets out a nervous giggle, then sighs. “I’ve got a lot on my mind.”

Sharlene Chiu’s FASHION + music pick: “Angels” by JJ

Comments

Maybe it’s because it’s finally starting to get sunny and warm but I can imagine playing JJ‘s “Angels” while sitting on a backyard patio sipping a nice cold beverage on a sticky summer night, with the occasional cool breeze. Wishful thinking? That being said I played the Swedish duo’s Kills mixtape like there was no tomorrow during the Christmas holidays, and now “Angels,” a cut from the album, has been given the music video treatment made in the style of a dazed tour diary. Clearly, I’m a sucker for some good ole “on the road” footage which the video beautifully displays. If this ignites the travel bug inside you, be sure to catch Sharlene Vs. Copenhagen on June 17th at 10pm ET on MTV! I’ve packed so much rad action in there, by the time you’re done with the show you’ll be nursing some hardcore jet-lag.

Sharlene Chiu’s FASHION + music pick: “Strawberry Swing” by Frank Ocean

Comments

To call Frank Ocean, of L.A. hip hop collective Odd Future Wolf Gang Kill Them All, an R&B artist is an understatement. Frank Ocean’s latest album “NOSTALGIA, Ultra” is a mixtape dripping with a ton of heart and soul and displays a remarkable storytelling talent that I seriously can’t wait to see develop into his next album. Expect samples from MGMT, Radiohead, Coldplay, Eagles, and even a clip from Eyes Wide Shut. I’ve been listening to this album a lot recently and even did a major cookout to it where I came up with this delicious recipe. Music and food… my loves.

Sharlene Chiu’s FASHION + music pick: “New Brigade” by Iceage

Comments

I started 2011 by travelling to Copenhagen for a week to shoot another episode of Sharlene Vs. While I was looking for new acts to meet up with, I came across this group of 18 and 19 year-olds called Iceage. Their debut album, New Brigade, comes out June 21st and is a blistering 26 minutes of frenetic raw punk that will knock you out so fast in the best way possible. Iceage’s bio describes them as a mixture of “punk, post-punk, Goth and hardcore as if they invented it.” Check out their lo-fi video for “New Brigade” and see for yourself.

Sharlene Chiu’s FASHION + music pick: “Beat and the Pulse” by Austra

Comments

I truly cannot get enough of Toronto’s Austra. Their debut album “Feel It Break” is set to come out May 16th and I guarantee you will become obsessed with Katie Stelmanis‘ seductive hush vocals. When she was 10 years old, Stelmanis joined the Canadian Children’s Opera Chorus and sang regularly for the prestigious Canadian Opera Company. Trust, this girl can sing. Check out Austra’s NSFW video for their hypnotic track, Beat and the Pulse.

Sharlene Chiu’s FASHION + music pick: “Young Blood” by The Naked and Famous

Comments

Attention music lovers: we’ve got a new gal on the scene (and by scene, we really mean website). Introducing our new contributor, the amazingly cool Sharlene Chiu of MTV. Known for her knack of spotting break out artists (she conducted the first on-air interviews with MGMT and Santigold to name a few) and lately for making Adele cry (in the good way!), the inimitable host will be treating us to some of the new hot bands on her radar every Friday! First up:

New Zealanders The Naked and Famous landed on the coveted BBC Sound of 2011 which started a whirlwind of a year for this five-piece who are often compared to the likes of MGMT and Passion Pit. Their infectiously catchy single “Young Blood” became the first debut single by a Kiwi band to reach #1 in their home country in 16 years! You can’t watch The Naked and Famous live and not leave away with a smile.

FASHION + music find: Emma-Lee

Emma Lee

FASHION is completely smitten with Toronto singer-songwriter Emma-Lee, who posted a video for “Just Looking” on our Music pillar recently. The 27-year-old’s eclectic style and quirky accessories are as charming as her song, recorded in a home demo last winter. ‘”Just Looking” will be re-recorded for Emma-Lee’s upcoming summer album – a sophomore effort she says will be “a mix of pop, rock and country-soul.”
