The Oscars: The best (and worst) of the red carpet

It wasn’t the most thrilling red carpet at last night’s Academy Awards–pastels and neutrals are lovely, but not that exciting when they parade en masse on TV. There were some high points–Sandra Bullock in Marchesa, Meryl Streep in an elegant white jersey Chris March dress and Maggie Gyllenhaal in fresh-off-the-runway Dries. Vera Farmiga’s uber-ruffled Marchesa split the pundits, but everyone pretty much agrees that Charlize’s “Cinnabon” dress was a no.

Click the images below for some of our favourites (and a few notable missteps). Who’s on your best (and worst) list from last night? Tell us in the comments!

One of our favourite dress-up occasions, the annual Buy Design party, has just announced the details for the seventh edition of the fundraiser, which supports Windfall (windfallbasics.com)–a clothing bank that provides new clothing and basic-needs items to vulnerable families in the GTA. Next year’s theme is the Dirty ’30s–apropos considering the current climate Read the rest of this entry »

Think fast: Mark Fast’s Toronto meet-up

dec09markfast6_lg

Photography by Raymund Galsim

On Friday morning we trekked out to Plutino Groups gorgeous loft offices to shoot an interview with London’s designer of the moment, Winnipeg native Mark Fast. We also got to see a few pieces from his upcoming lower-priced line, Faster (which we can’t share yet), and check out some complicated knit creations from his Spring 2010 collection, including a dress covered in Swarovski Crystal Pearls that feels like it weighs about 50 lbs. (Get the full story when our video airs in January.) As part of the meet-and-greet festivities, the designer threw a cocktail fête at Mercer Street boîte Ame. Click the images below to see some snaps from the party.

Lorenzo Martone hits Toronto for the Prada book launch and some mystery meetings

Last night, Prada held its first Toronto bash since the party for the opening of the Bloor Street location in 1997. It took the launch of a Prada book to warrant another celebration, and the delay only seemed to heighten the thrill. Devoted followers of fashion’s highest priestess, Miuccia, paid homage by arriving in her black lace sheaths, metal-coated wools, and this season’s studded shirts and shoes. But it wasn’t wall-to-wall Prada: Stacey Kimel, who was squiring around Marc Jacobs’ beau Lorenzo Martone, wore winged Balmain while Martone’s feet glowed in a pair of Louis Vuitton sneakers scribbled with Stephen Sprouse graffiti. Party pics: Bloor Street comes out for CANFAR

On Wednesday night, Bloor Street threw it’s massive annual fundraising effort for the Canadian Foundation for Aids Research (CANFAR). To reach their $400,000 goal, Bloor Street Entertains turns boutiques all over Toronto’s Yorkville neighborhood in pop-up restos catered by the city’s top chefs. Marc Thuet, Jamie Kennedy and Blu’s Massimo Collavani were just a few of the foodie names who cooked menus at venues normally known for dishing out luxe–Tiffany & Co., Eleven, George C., Holt Renfrew, Teatro Verde and Cartier among them. After dinner, the party moved over to the Royal Ontario Museum where the guest list included designers Sunny Fong, Jeremy Laing, Philip Sparks and Nada Shepherd, Canadian fashion royals Joe Mimran and Kimberley Newport-Mimran (who were also the event’s co-chairs), and sea of smartly dressed socials who cut a rug and tried to outbid each other in the silent auction.

Calgary: Christina Hendricks, Heather Marks and Elisha Cuthbert party at Holt Renfrew opening

While we were busy at the New Moon premiere in Toronto on Thursday night, Holt Renfrew was loading up on star power for the opening of their new Calgary flagship. Mad Men’s Christina Hendricks was there (with new hubby Geoffrey Arend) in a cool suit-like dress by Canadian David Szeto, while Calgary homegirl Heather Marks sported a mesh dress with patent appliqués by another Canuck designer, Rita Liefhebber. Jeremy Piven, Gossip Girl Kristen Bell and Glee’s Jessalyn Gilsig also made an appearance, as did 24’s Elisha Cuthbert with her Flames boyfriend, Dion Phaneuf.  Calgary band The Fast Romantics played a set (with some unplanned accompaniment from Piven, who insisted on drumming–to mixed reviews) before handing over the dance floor to DJ Samantha Ronson.

Frocktail hosts competitive shopping for a good cause

nov09frocktail1_lg

Photography by Jon Howcroft

The first annual Frocktail Party combined cocktails and competitive shopping, with all proceeds going to fund juvenile diabetes research. Held in Toronto this past Thursday, the sold-out event saw women showing up to bid on more than 80 pre-loved dresses and accessories, and men following in their wake to see the Shark Week behavior of the bidding babes.

While tastes varied, all Frocktailees agreed that with 100 per cent of the nights profits going to the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation—the night was organized by a group of young ladies who had seen their friend Vanessa Oliver deal with the daily realities of living with juvenile diabetes—there was no guilt involved in splurging. Our 10-minute date with Keanu Reeves

FMtiff09pippaparty3

Photography by George Pimentel

I have still not recovered from my hot date with Keanu Reeves at the Hotel Le Germain last night.

Okay, hot date might be stretching it. But a full-on conversation with a celebrity at TIFF is a rarity – let alone a 10-minute one.

We were in the hotel’s slick dining room, Victor, at a party hosted by Joe Fresh Style and Maple Pictures for The Private Lives of Pippa Lee. The film, directed by Rebecca Miller (frilled out in black and white Topshop), concerns the emotional fall-out when Pippa Lee (Robin Wright Penn) moves to the ’burbs with her recently retired husband.
