Power play

This past Thursday, FASHION went Powerballin’ at the Power Plant’s 11th annual “original contemporary art party,” the Power Ball. Co-chaired by Cleophee Eaton, Michael Cooper and Queen West gallery guy Clint Roenisch, the trailer-trash bash was as much about raising hell as raising funds. Design duo du jour Castor hauled in their high-kitsch Winnebago and–what swine flu?–a real, live-looking pig roast. Next door, art (and bar) star Dean Baldwin slung vodka and Kool-Aid to the likes of Drake Hotel-ier Jeff Stober. In the “video outhouse,” scandalous “private parties” became less so, as they were broadcast to the big screen inside; other projections included “Mad Max” and a “Conceptual Art soft porn peep show.” Read the rest of this entry »

Discretely tucked above a Queen Street West shop, Canada’s Red Bull offices held an intimate concert by larger-than-life performers Fritz Helder & The Phantoms. The crowd toasted the weekend and waited for the Toronto outfit to take the stage, taking in designs from Greta Constantine, Jeremy Laing, Nada, Oligarchy, Pink Cobra, Evan Biddell, Label, Franke for Chasse Gardée, Jaime Galindo and Hoi Bo, all of which were to be auctioned off to benefit Fashion Cares and ACT (AIDS Committee of Toronto). Take it outside

may09skylounge_lg

The hotel bar is a bastion of old-school glamour, so we jumped on the chance to take our patio-ing up a notch last week at the Intercontinental’s SkyLounge, which opened with a splash on a glorious 24-degree evening, and not a moment too soon. Its sleek low loungers were filled with sun-deprived Toronto media faces, such as Jian Ghomeshi and Anne Mroczkowski, who nibbled delicious bites from Signatures restaurant and sipped the signature cocktail; Ernestine’s Elixir, with Hpnotiq, lychee liqueur and cran—$1 from each one sold will go to Ernestine’s Women’s Shelter. Providing a suitably sophisticated soundtrack (complete with harp) were students from the Royal Conservatory’s Glenn Gould School, who will be strumming their stuff on the patio throughout the summer. We know what we’ll be doing at 5.02 p.m. on Thursdays…

Snaps from the party after the jump. Read the rest of this entry »

Since moving to the ‘hood just over 6 months ago, this fashionable girl has been loving the fashionable events that take place on this side of Yonge Street. Even more so this week with soirees on back-to-back nights. Tuesday we were headed to the recently opened Jezebel on the hip Ossington strip where Joe Fresh and Rethink Breast Cancer were launching the latest incarnation of the cute bullseye tee. Although the weather is still playing some not-so-nice tricks on us, thankfully for yours truly the spring party season is in full, fashionable swing. Case in point, this fashionable girl popped by two very different, but very chic soirees last night. Read the rest of this entry »

Fashionistas in space

This year’s Buy Design for Windfall (buydesignforwindfall.ca) fundraiser went off without a hitch this past weekend. Themed Buy Design in Space, the futuristic fashion set came out in droves to raise funds for the charity—Canada’s only new-clothing bank—with the always-exciting live and silent auctions (items included M.A.C and Chanel gift baskets and tickets for the Toronto Symphony Orchestra). We had our eye on a few prizes, but alas, nothing made it home with us. Not even the jam-packed gift bag, which we think we left in someone’s car! (Too many Moon Juice cocktails to remember!)

There’s no better way to celebrate the slightly warmer weather than with the reopening of two of our favourite high-enders on Bloor Street. First off was Gucci (130 Bloor St. W., 416-963-5127), where revellers sipped champagne cocktails and mingled among the mass amounts of haute accessories. (We couldn’t get over the flats made for the tiniest of tots). The new store is all luxe.

Parties: Women X Women and Jezebel

Girls on film: Canadian model Coco Rocha, in head-to-toe Greta Constantine (fall, of course), sent flash bulbs into a frenzy on King Street on Thursday night when she arrived at the Women X Women party, held at the future home of the Fashion House condos. (One photographer even joked with the new redhead that she was looking better than Ms. Jolie.) Read the rest of this entry »

While we normally sit at home all dolled up in our finest dress and heels to watch the Oscars, (what? We’re sure we’re not alone!), we couldn’t pass on the 1st annual To Oscar with LOVE charity dinner at the Eglinton Grand.
