Mad Men Recap: Betty’s back, Don gets a lesson in girl behaviour, Sally learns how to fake cry and Pete can’t stop thinking about Rory Gilmore

She ain’t heavy, she’s just Betty! The last significant taste we got of Mrs. Francis was when she was having a health scare and a sundae. While she’s the focus this ep, the rest of the cast (except Lane, who must be fist fighting in a pub somewhere) gets at least a little time to whine: Pete’s affair with his train bud’s wife is still distracting him when he’s not busy giving New York Times interviews; Ginsberg joins Peggy in some late night sidelining; Don’s back in the office on weekends and seems to be done with his “love leave” now that Megan has resigned; and last week may have been all about the phone booth but this week the elevator gets some major play. Let’s see where everyone is getting off…

Inside The Room Vancouver’s Mary Katrantzou fête: The city’s finest donning Magic Eye prints and designer hints of another possible collab

Pattern princess Mary Katrantzou’s first-ever visit to Vancouver (“We’ve got fantastic weather, and I was expecting gloomy rain!” she enthused in an earlier interview) turned out a colourful crowd at The Room at the Bay last night. A noticeable number of party people sported kaleidoscopic looks from the designer’s new collection, which has gained equal notoriety for its elevation of everyday objects such as spoons and typewriters, as well as its trippy, engrossing patterns reminiscent of Magic Eye images from the ‘90s (a comparison Mary acknowledges with, “Yes, I heard that recently! I wasn’t sure what those magical eye drawings were.”)

Kate Middleton is an extra-special TGIF treat in the most beautiful teal Jenny Packham gown ever

This week’s extra-special TGIF treat comes via Kate Middleton and her latest red carpet appearance in London. Tonight (as in now, in EST time warp terms), Kate is attending “Our Greatest Team Rises,” a concert to celebrate British athletes competing in the upcoming London Olympic games at the Royal Albert Hall. The details of who’s all playing and/or attending are really inconsequential (okay, aside from Mel C.) when put in the same paragraph as this teal masterpiece by Jenny Packham. The masterpiece is from Packham’s spring bridal collection, though the colour wasn’t shown with the assortment. (Get it? Because they were all white?) Also interesting to note is that Kate’s wearing the same Jimmy Choo heels that she wore earlier this week at Claridge’s Hotel. TGIF, indeed!

Quotable: Don’t worry, this designer’s love for plastic surgery won’t result in him getting a new, Bruce Jenner-esque face

Comments

According to Tom Ford, cutting and pinning fabric is a lot like cutting and pinning a face. The designer explained while at the 92Y in New York, “In another life I would love to be a cosmetic surgeon because it’s architectural. You know, you are trying to figure out where the seams go. Can I do it in one piece like Halston? Can you formaldehyde DNA?” But despite his ambitions in plasticity, it seems as though Ford won’t be pulling a Bruce Jenner anytime soon:

Downton Fever: How a British period drama managed to get the reality-TV generation addicted

Comments

Browsing the newsstand at London’s Heathrow Airport last November, I found tabloids full of footballers’ wives, all orange of complexion and platform of shoe, and the glossier monthlies stocked with society girls. But whether their readers’ penchant was for players’ wives or the polo set, every magazine I read contained at least one story extolling the brilliance of Downton Abbey.

Meanwhile, in North America, despite winning six Emmys last September, Downton Abbey hadn’t yet broken into the mainstream. The ITV1 television series set in World War I–era England chronicles in equal measure the lives of the upper-class Crawley family and their servants. A quiet but respectable viewership had discovered the show in its first season on PBS’s Masterpiece Classic, but when season two began at the start of 2012, we fell into the grips of a collective Downton fever like a heartbroken fiancée succumbing to Spanish flu. This might be because Downton offers something for almost everyone. There is the wealth and glamour of the Crawley family, who dress every night for dinner as though they’re attending the Met Ball. Downstairs, the servants’ plays for household power mirror the tension of Glengarry Glen Ross, except here it’s “A-Always, B-Be, C-Conspiring.” And juxtaposed against the feeling that you’re watching a classic literary adaptation are elements that reflect a contemporary audience, from caught-in-the-act trysts to the characters learning how to use a telephone. Downton is no Greek drama, with the action happening offstage.

Of course, there is romance. The will-they-or-won’t-they relationships of two sets of lovers have kept viewers tuning in: more than five million watched the season two finale. In Canada, Downton is now enjoying a run on VisionTV on Wednesday evenings.

“There’s a cadre of people who are watching it because it’s an allowable soap,” says New Yorker TV critic Emily Nussbaum. “It’s dressed up in all sorts of fancy class indicators including, but not limited to, England, PBS and historical times, and rich people in large country houses.” And, as Nussbaum adds, it is very well made, costing roughly $1.6 million per episode to produce.

It’s also extremely fun to talk about. With season two came online recaps from New York magazine’s Vulture and Vanity Fair’s The Hollywood Blog (we at FASHION produced a wonderful one). Further signs of the show’s reach include character-inspired Twitter accounts and countless memes—all that’s missing is a Tumblr of Ryan Gosling Hey Girl–ing the women of Downton.
