Fitness pick: CYKL’s model-approved spin classes

By Karen Cleveland

My first introduction to spinning turned me off: Terrible house music, boring repetition and sauna-like studios put me off for years.

But now CYKL (68 Bathurst St., Toronto, 416-504-2955, cykl.ca) at Bathurst and Wellington, has lured me into a love affair with indoor cycling. The brainchild of a fashion photographer and former model (they ought to know fit, right?) CYKL promises to get participants “real fit, real fast.” Read more »

Makeup superstar Dick Page refuses to judge a reality show, but loves a good leg of lamb

Sadly, no XXs or Oos included. Photography by Kira Crugnale

When you’re based in Toronto, it’s not often that you get the privilege of encountering your idolized beauty rock stars in person, since so few of the major ones ever cross our border. Please, Pat McGrath or Guido Palau in our city? Never happening. The only way you’ll get face time with these power players is by going to New York, where I was lucky enough interview the almighty Dick Page at a Shiseido event back in May, about eyeshadows he designed for the brand. I’ve spoken before of my admiration for him, but this launch was a chance to interview him for more than the few minutes you get backstage at New York Fashion Week, where you’re expected to clear out as soon as you have your quotes. I’m already giddily anxious in his presence, but what elevated the night to a whole other level was the fact that the president of Shiseido Canada invited Dick for drinks with us afterwards—and he accepted! We ended up at some random champagne bar, and while I didn’t get to sit next to him (that honour went to an editor from Montreal), I learned a few things about him that have nothing to do with makeup: Read more »

M.A.C pulls the Rodarte makeup collection

M.A.C has announced that they won’t be shipping the makeup collection created by Rodarte’s Kate and Laura Mulleavy. The collection, which, like the pair’s Fall 2010 collection, was inspired by Mexico–specifically the troubled town of Ciudad Juárez. Controversy ignited around the line after some bloggers protested that the names of the products–a polish called “Juarez,” a lipstick named “Ghost Town”–glamourized poverty and violence against women in the factory town. M.A.C responded by offering to donate profits from the collection to charitable initiatives in Ciudad Juárez, but yesterday posted the following on their Facebook page: Read more »

Q&A: Adriana Lima’s trainer tells us how she got back into pre-baby shape

By Valeria Nekhim

When one of the planet’s most famous Angels, Adriana Lima, had two weeks to get her body looking otherworldly for the Victoria’s Secret 2008 fashion show, she turned to Michael Olajide Jr., a former boxing champion and the co-founder of Aerospace, Manhattan’s sleek, machine-free boxing fitness centre. Fast-forward one year to November 2009, and Olajide had an even bigger challenge: Lima, a new mom, needed to return to her Brazilian bombshell form—fast. FASHION got a hold of the man himself on a break from training his A-list clientele (Hugh Jackman and Mickey Rourke anyone?) to get the scoop on how Lima got her Angel wings back in only five months.

When Adriana came to you two weeks before the Victoria’s Secret show in 2008, what physical goals was she hoping to achieve?
“She achieved the look that she wanted, which was really lean, defined muscle. It was very important that she didn’t bulk up and she wanted to maintain femininity. She had about two weeks to make weight, kind of like a fighter needs for the title, because she’s going out there in the barest of things in front of millions of people on TV.  She came in at the last second and had never boxed before, and she really came up.” Read more »

Getaway: A spa weekend at The Wauwinet, Nantucket

Now, knowing my husband and I—city types if there ever were a pair of grumpy people who met at 1:30 a.m. at a dirty after-hours club—you probably would never guess that the charming, low-key island of Nantucket (the less-flashy sister to nearby Martha’s Vineyard) would be the first place we’d honeymoon. But we put on our best seafaring New England, old-money, preppy faces and had a lovely old Americana time. We checked into The Wauwinet (wauwinet.com), a famous seaside retreat nine miles out of town, and well, other than port and cheese in the library at five, there isn’t much to do, so off to the spa I went. Beauty pick: MyFaceworks nutrient-infused masks

I’m all for getting facials and luxurious spa treatments that leave me so relaxed I’m practically immobile (seriously, I often need to take a cab home post-pampering), but there’s something about spending hours indoors at the spa when the sun’s shining outside that just isn’t ideal. Enter MyFaceworks (myfaceworks.com), a Vancouver company that specializes in “sheet” masks. Read more »

Lindsay Lohan to be denied the use of a flatiron upon her release from jail

Image via Racked

The L.A. Sheriff’s Department has said that Lindsay Lohan could be released as early as Sunday, and speculation is already underway about the star’s all-important jail-to-car look. For what is surely one of the most photographed occasions of a young girl’s life, stylist and ballet-flat designer Phillip Bloch already has a look in mind: Read more »
