Day four – TGIF

After a late night (12 a.m.!) at the J.Lindeberg fashion show, hosted by Elmer Olsen Model Management at the Ultra Supper Club on Queen Street West, FASHION realized two things the next morning:
- Sunglasses and a slick of bright lipgloss do a feting femme good
- Blazer-wearing boys (in the show and the crowd) are on our style radar
Promptly at 12 noon, FASHION arrived at the Four Seasons Hotel Avenue bar for a Fashion Design Council of Canada (FDCC) lunch. On the menu: designer Thien Le’s Japanese-inspired couture collection. While the chow did wow (smoked tomato bisque and a sliver of peppermint chocolate chip cheesecake), the hand-painted and embroidered wedding kimono was the real pièce de résistance. Cool kabuki-style makeup and traditional geisha shoes (called okobo) on the models made FASHION dream of a lazy afternoon under a cherry blossom tree. After the show, we said arigato to the FDCC committee and zoomed across town for the final collections…

The latest line from Joe Mimran (a.k.a. the Club Monaco King) is as the name suggests: fresh and stylish. Editors, buyers and the Mimran masses sat in bleachers (sort of high school meets high fashion) to check out the fall collection. The first look was one of FASHION’s faves: a cloche hat, a grey cowl-neck dress, grey tights and canary yellow wellies. Definitely sweet and under a C-note. FASHION had a mad-about-mod moment as the line had a strong ’60s vibe. Must-haves? Miniskirts, berets, knit dresses, and patent flats with a buckled square toe (taking a style cue from shoe guru Roger Vivier). The black bubble skirt that closed the show was a frothy find for under $60. Upon leaving, FASHION felt like Cinderella when we opened our swag bag to find a pair of black patent flats in size 8.

Despite the late start and the lack of insulation in the Queen Street West gallery space (read: frozen fashionistas), the show proved to be well worth the wait. Black and more black set the tone for the all-jersey collection. Inspirations? Joan Crawford and Christy Turlington. GC was all about the dress this season, with a few sexy bodysuits thrown into the mix. Note: Dresses are to women what suits are to men: smart, sleek and strong. FASHION’s heart skipped a beat for the racer-back dress, and the ultra-thick leather waist cinchers—very Dita Von Teese. GC is a master of the effortlessly chic silhouette. Par example: the black strapless dress with a tiny fur shrug. Perfect for an evening of jazz and gin with a gentleman.
