Guelph: Cosmos on a Sunday afternoon

Sometimes there just aren’t enough stylish events happening in Guelph.  But when a dry spell hits, a few dedicated fashion advocates step in to create some fashionable fun. This week marked the DVD release of the Sex and the City movie and with a screening at the Bookshelf Cinema downtown (41 Quebec Street, bookshelf.ca), there was no better time to throw a party. Though the movie debuted in theatres months ago, a group of fabulous folks jumped at the chance to celebrate, but this time with cosmos in hand.

The night began at Blush boutique with private shopping sessions, moving across the street to the red-carpeted Bookshelf eBar, which served delicious “anatomically-inspired” hors d’oeuvres (let’s just say I will never look at salmon gravlax the same ever again) and SATC-themed cocktails. Some crowd favourites were The Park Avenue Princess (a white wine spritzer with black currant liqueur), Samantha’s Dirty Martini, Dirty Bastard and the ubiquitous cosmopolitan.

The main event took place in the Bookshelf’s 130-seat theatre. Since most of the SATC cinephiles had already seen the movie once or twice, this was a chance to really pay attention to the fashion.  My favourite item from the movie (and the audience) was Carrie’s vintage black studded belt.  I have a feeling that, since we just can’t celebrate this movie enough, there will be a SATC DVD party in my future – I just need to find an outfit.

Shown: Belt, $150 by Brave Belts; Clutch, $45, by Olga Berg. Both at Blush (38 Quebec St., 519-822-9669, blushshop.ca). Photography by Heather Loney.

While I appreciate your writing style I think the subject is about dated. Was there nothing more interesting for you to talk about-Carrie Bradshaw no longer represents 20 and 30 somethings. You might want to rethink your fashion thinking, it’s about five years behind

Whoa harsh. I think your writing is great Heather and I think the idea of Carrie Bradshaw as a fashion icon is still valid. Keep up the solid work.
