Saskatoon: Broadway bound
It’s no coincidence that Broadway is lined with independently owned boutiques, cafes and specialty stores. Broadway was Saskatoon’s first commercial area and included such landmarks as the general store, dairy, post office, theatre and bank. It is an area rich in history and a sense of community, while promoting local businesses and a spirit of individuality.
I recently immersed myself in its stylish spirit and joined forces with the army of fashionistas on a beautiful fall day. My first stop was Divine (725 Broadway Ave., 306-933-2622, divineplanet.com), a busy haven filled with regulars and newcomers alike. With a large selection of vintage clothing and friendly staff that are more than welcome to help you in finding what you are looking, makes anyone want to add this as a point of interest on their fashion map. My personal favorite was the basket of scarves, like a treasure chest to my eyes. Finding the perfect scarf to add to my collection is like hitting gold.
Just down the street is Mint Fashion Company (731 Broadway Ave., 306-477-1233) and their collection of FullCircle, Brit label Firetrap and shoes from Colcci. Walls are adorned with outfits perfect for a date or a girl’s night out and there’s a wide range of bags from popular vegan label Matt & Nat.
Stop and recharge by grabbing a latte at the Broadway Roastery (614C Broadway Ave., 306-652-5558, broadwayroastery.com), a busy little hangout with plenty of room inside and out to rest. Flip through a magazine or people watch and enjoy the styles on the avenue’s busy runway.
If you are still haven’t found that perfect piece, Schmatta (726 Broadway Ave., 306-664-9595) is your place. You can get custom-designed shirts or choose from their huge selection of pictures to have printed on an article of clothing of your choice.
The fun doesn’t stop when the sun goes down. Relax and enjoy drinks and appys on the rooftop patio at the Yard and Flagon (718 Broadway Ave., 306-652-5273) or head down the block to Lydia’s Pub (650 Broadway Ave., 306-652-8595) and enjoy some live music. With Broadway’s eclectic mix of shops and styles, it leaves no one disappointed and a day well spent.
