Winnipeg: Party arty with Melissa and Niki
Melissa Trainor and Niki Trosky are two local ladies who really know how to throw a party.
The pair has been collaborating for a little over a year now and have thrown three parties, each with its own unique theme, centered on supporting local artists. Their motto: “Buy art, live better.”
Their most recent outing, Wal*art, drew a crowd of 600 people to Graffiti Art Programming (109 Higgins Ave., 204-667-9960, graffitigallery.ca), a not-for-profit youth art centre in downtown Winnipeg.
When I asked Trainor where the inspiration for Wal*art came from, she explained they wanted to support local artists, the opposite of big international corporations, hence the play on Wal-Mart. “We’re all about supporting social change locally.”
Not only did the party feature the work of 17 local artists, but there was also living art. Ten models, in extravagant costumes and hair, mingled with party-goers throughout the evening.
Because of the party’s huge success, GAP has invited the dynamic duo back to throw another one of their soirees.
The pair have more art parties planned for the spring. For more information on upcoming events, or to work with these lovely ladies, you can contact Trainor or Trosky via Facebook.
