Halifax: The sweetest little shop

With its big bay window, sleek racks and clean decor, Sweet Pea (1542 Queen St., 902-423-0975) sure looks like a boutique. With its ever-churning traffic of midday shoppers, big bags elbowed and hanger-sifting fingers poised, it sure feels like one. And with a only a few of each style in a library of dresses, it sure holds its nose like a boutique. But the price tags dangling from those adorable little frocks will make you think otherwise.

In 2007, owner Johanna Galipeau, then 19, was fed up with spending money on mall finds that she’d later see all over the city, but her student pocketbook didn’t allow for the luxuries of boutique shopping. With Sweet Pea, she could provide that coveted shopping experience, minus the guilt, by keeping prices to an entirely palatable $80 average. (Canadian-made or environmentally friendly lines are allow to bend that rule.)

The boutique also indulges another of Galipeau’s guilty pleasures: dresses. Save a few cardigans and billowy tops, the shop is equipped entirely with this girly garment, challenging its customers to realize dresses don’t always mean dressy. Each week, the racks are restocked with Canadian and international lines (with 80 percent based in Canada). It’s a mix of eccentric pieces with the ultimate in pretty and the comfort of casual.

As a girl with a wardrobe dedicated entirely to a frilly-over-frumpy cause, I long ago proclaimed Sweet Pea Boutique as my favourite and most dependable Halifax shop. But a recent visit, when a local mother-daughter pair announced that—despite having spotted Galipeau’s SP shopping bags around the city—this was their first venture into the boutique, I realized the shop might benefit from a little more volume. So Halifax, if you’ve yet to veer from the comforts of Spring Garden Road, take a few steps up Queen and fall in love, like me, with a sweet little shop that never disappoints.

Definitely found some beautiful dresses there last summer…but not since. Hoping I can find one for graduation!

I was really worried for this little boutique when I heard about our economic woes–but Johanna says she’s doing great, has a lot more customers because the people who would normally shop at Foreign Affair or the expensive shops around town are starting to come to her store. Good for her!

Sweet Pea has saved me in an extreme fashion emergency (I needed a dress for a wedding reception app. three hours before it started) and for that I will be forever grateful!

It’s a lot better for us to support local boutiques like SP than stores like Le Chateau – so listen to Nadine and walk your pretty little selves away from Spring Garden for a change! (And maybe get some delicious Thai food from the restaurant next door while you’re at it…)

It’s fantastic to see Johanna getting some much-deserved love from our equally love-deserving fashion blogger. Halifax certainly is in need of more gems like Sweet Pea, and I hope the trend continues to move towards quasi-boutiques like this instead of the big box stores.

    Great post Nadine!
As a new resident of Halifax, I’m finding it hard to find great fashion for a good deal – where to look?! I’ll be sure to check out Sweet Pea next time I’m in need of a little black dress. Or a little red dress, or lavender, or turquoise…..

I looove Sweet Pea…. I buy a new dress there almost everyweek – and my bank account doesnt take a big hit!
Each style is usually sold out within a few days – so not everygirl in Halifax will be wearing your dress!

I love the diversity of the dresses you can find there. Everything from an oh-my-god-sexy black dress with a heavy industrial zipper up the front, to a flouncy, frilly blush frock that would make any woman want to throw on a pair of pointe shoes and do a little swan lake right in the store.

Great post. Always keeping Halifax in the know!

Sweet Pea has the most stylish, affordable variety of unique pieces in all of Halifax. As a resident of Toronto, with access to hundreds of shops and boutiques, I used to never shop in Halifax…now i make a special trip there to buy from Sweet Pea. Not only are the dresses gorgeous but i am almost guaranteed not to run into another like it as the limited pieces sell out in only days.
Johanna has a way with fashion so if you’re lost she will more than gladly point you in the trendiest direction!

great post nadine! i loved it. it was nice to read such a refreshing article about my favorite boutique in halifax.

as one of sweetpea’s employees, i have to say how exciting it is to read all of the other posts about the article/store. it’s fantastic knowing that so many people rely on sweetpea for finding the perfect piece, whatever the occasion may be. i’ve been known to buy a new dress every two weeks – basically every pay cheque ;) and i hardly ever run into other halifax fashionistas wearing the same piece.

i also have to give credit to johanna for always knowing my personal style in her ability to hand-pick dresses she knows reflect me, and helping me to decide which ones to ultimately purchase when choosing from a well stocked dressing room.

This is exactly the kind of article that I am looking for when I come to a blog specifically about Halifax Fashion: an article about HALIFAX fashion. I can’t go to any of the other blogs to get this information. Sure if I want to know the latest trends I can peruse all the entries, but this specifically tells me about my own city.

    Fantastic!

Nice post. It’s nice that originality can be found on this coast…and it’s great–as a guy–to know that someone’s got my back in finding unique shops that won’t bust my bank (especially around V-Day) Keep it up :)

It is my favorite store in Halifax and I love going in and looking at all the unique pieces!! I love walking into the store because it is so girly and refreshing. I check in almost every week to see whats new.

Great as always, Nadine! I LOVE this story, and wish there was one like it in the wilds of Toronto! Kudos to Ms Galipeau for following her dreams at such a young age! She too has saved me… I was rushing to the airport to go directly to a Toronto Film fest soriee, and she provided me with a beeeeeautiful frock without breaking the bank.
