Montreal: Missy Industry does silver with an edge
My favorite Sundays are usually the ones where I get to read a book while eating breakfast on the counter at Dusty’s, topped off by a nice walk through Mile End and up to one of my favorite little stores, General 54 (54 St. Viateur W., 514-271-2129, general54.blogspot.com).
I’m always eager to find the perfect hidden treasure to give my look an edge and at the General, I’ve rarely failed at that task. The shop is half vintage clothing, half designer gear and always a great partner in crime. On my last visit, I found an amazing necklace called Shears–a pair of sterling-silver scissors with an oxidized finish–handmade by Mélissa Lafrenière for her jewellery collection, Missy Industry (missyindustry.etsy.com). A graduate from l’École de Joaillerie de Montréal, Lafrenière launched her jewellery line in 2004 and describes her style as “a perfect clash of vintage-gothic-rocker with a girly twist.” I must admit I find her collection a bit uneven and not every piece make such strong statements as Shears ($74) and Cardio ($64), but I am sure her variety will allow you to find your dream piece. If only I still had money left from my shopping spree in Kensington Market during my Canadian Music Week getaway in Toronto. Wait for me scissors! Me and my next paycheque!
