How to Dress for a Wedding Intro
As the weather gets warmer and the hemlines get shorter, the wedding invitations start rolling in. That’s right: Summer wedding season is upon us once again. And while we love an excuse to go shopping, how to dress for a wedding is a question us bona fide wedding attendees are still having difficulty answering.

Summer 2013: Letter from the editor

Photograph by Vanessa Heins; hair and makeup by Sheri Stroh for Plutino Group; shot on location at the Shangri-La Hotel, Toronto.

A Muslim who works at Bikini Village– what could be more Canadian than that?

When we asked writer Maryam Siddiqi to talk to women about how they balance fashion and faith (“Feel the Heat,” page 107), little did we know the stories she would uncover.

A Brazilian who moved to Montreal and converted from sleeveless and strings to Orthodox Judaism. An Ontario woman who dons different outfits for her parents, in-laws, husband and friends. Clearly summer, for some, is complicated…far beyond deciding whether your new sandals should be gladiators or platforms.

The other eye-opener in this issue is how much success Canadian designers have had selling swimwear. In “Catch the Wave” (page 54), senior editor Sarah Casselman profiles five brands making a splash on the international scene—led by Montreal’s Shan, which has 125 employees and distribution in more than 25 countries. We’ve also aimed to make your swimsuit shopping smoother with market editor Caitlan Moneta’s roundup of the best new suits (“Bathing Beauties,” page 72) and our Focus guide to the country’s swimwear retailers (page 174). From Rihanna to Daft Punk: How musicians are keeping fashion collaborations interesting

Musicans Fashion Collaborations

When it comes to collaborations, it seems like we’ve seen it all. The over-saturation of these fast fashion moments hardly allows us enough time to digest one limited-edition collection before our attention is pushed towards another. We’d say we were over the thrill, but that would probably be a lie. Especially with the refreshingly new kind of collaboration starting to emerge: that of the designer/musician collab. Though the musician half of the partnership rarely has experience in the fashion industry, there is something incredibly exciting about these strategic alliances. When the worlds of fashion and music collide, as we’ve seen happen with Beyonce’s latest collection for H&M, the media buzz is unbeatable. Designers and musicians tend to identify each other’s creative values, so why not work together?

Fashion favourite Hedi Slimane of Saint Laurent Paris has traded in models for musicians with the Saint Laurent Music Project, a portrait series inspired by the relationship between music and classic YSL. French duo Daft Punk, who mixed Slimane’s spring womenswear runway soundtrack, is the latest addition to the series. The designer also shot the dapper set’s June 2013 cover for Dazed & Confused. Slimane reaffirmed his ability to mold contemporary music through his recent collaboration with Canadian mixstress of the moment, Claire Boucher aka. Grimes. The two recently produced a collection of illustrated men’s T-shirts, influence by vintage YSL love posters. Grimes, who doubles as a talented illustrator, inked the five T-shirt designs herself (they’re currently available on ssense.com).

How to wear a crop top: 11 Style Panel tips that make skin-baring a lot less scary

How to wear a crop top

Ever have one of those intimidating statement pieces that makes you feel so self-conscious about your body that it makes you want to sprint to the gym immediately? This may as well be the tale of the crop top.

Showing your midriff once seemed like a scandalous look, only to be tested by celebrities —think Britney Spears circa “Baby One More Time”—this season, the crop top has emerged as feminine, even covering our current issue on Lana Del Rey!

Lead by designers like Peter Som with his Spring 2013 bralet and high-waisted flowing skirt, we’re beginning to see how ladylike this look can be. With different styles and fits including the bustier, the cropped T-shirt and the waist-tied blouse, the crop top can be altered to your preferred degree of mid-section baring.

Still questioning how to wear a crop top? Fear not, because 11 of our Style Panel members share tips on how to easily pull off this spring trend sans butterflies in your stomach.

Opting to show a little less skin, many of our girls decided to pair their flirty crop tops with cute midi skirts like BornLippy’s Melanie Morais and Dainty Girl’s Nicole Wilson who chose to wear tie-knot crop tops that tastefully bares a sliver of their midriff. Showing off a bit more skin, Leah SaysLeah Gust was all smiles as she takes on two spring trends, the crop top and the graphic floral print, in today’s outfit. But what’s the best way to wear your crop top this season? Taking Style Worthwhile’s Jacquelyn Son’s advice, rock your crop top with confidence.

Question 50: Can you share tips on how to wear a crop top this season? Read the answers now! »

Who else but the Duchess of Cambridge could get Karl Lagerfeld to whip out his pen with the promise of nothing more than fantasy? Today, Women’s Wear Daily released 13 sketches of maternity designs suggested by the likes of Donna Karan, Vera Wang, Alexis Mabille, Chloé and Lagerfeld for Chanel as Kate Middleton’s baby bump continue to grow. Including both designers who frequently dress the Duchess like Amanda Wakeley, and ones who haven’t, like Huishan Zhang, the piece could be a good shot for some less recognizable names to get noticed by friends in royal places. Or not. If nothing else, it’s an exercise in imagination, which hasn’t been attempted since the Duke and Duchess’s last big event: the Royal Wedding. We picked a few designs from the selection that we think are right on the money for Kate. Click through for our selects and visit WWD for the full maternity monty.

Rodarte may or may not be teaming up with Dakota and Elle Fanning

Rodarte Dakotta Fanning Elle Fanning

How much did we adore the Fanning sisters’ gowns at the Met Gala last Monday? We loved the winged back, the sheer panels and the tie-dye. We loved it all. Well, rumour has it 19-year-old Dakota and 15-year-old Elle Fanning may be heading to the drawing board and teaming up to work with Rodarte designers Kate and Laura Mulleavy.

We love a good collab and when two sisters pair up with two sisters, it is mind blowing. They haven’t hit their 20s and the sisters already have designer campaigns like Marc Jacobs and Miu Miu under their respective belts. Dakota even once stated how much her little sister Elle appreciates fashion: “Elle knows every single model, every single collection, every single piece from every single collection… She has a real passion, and it’s not at all in a materialistic way. She genuinely appreciates the workmanship and creativity.” So it’s no surprise to see this superstar pair wishing to cross over to the other side to input some of their ideas into the design. And according to a fashion mole at Daily Mail, the Fanning sisters were quite “hands on” in designing their stunning Met Gala dresses last Monday.

Though a Rodarte rep has already stepped forward to squash the rumours, we’re still holding out hope. This kind of thing has been denied into reality before. Let’s cross those fingers.
