Adventures at Anthropologie
With its decorative curios, ceramic and wrought-iron housewares and eclectic print clothing, Anthropologie (anthropologie.com) feels like a delicate homage to the Victorian era. The official opening of its Yorkville outpost, its second store opening in Toronto in the past six months, felt like a tea party straight out of the Victorian favourite Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland. No Mad Hatters or White Rabbits, but plenty of miniature quiches, cupcakes and heart-shaped petit fours circulated— though none said “Eat Me,” I am sure they made me grow a bit in the middle. If Starbucks tea was not a shopper’s bag, fun punch kept attendees hydrated as they happily took to the two jewellery-making tables. These were no mere strands of beads—with the help of Anthropologie designers, creative gals made all sorts of bibs using all manner of fabric, trimmings and findings. Meanwhile, those who perused and purchased did so knowing 10 per cent of sales that evening went to the Nature Conservancy of Canada (natureconservancy.ca). We picked up the tome Novel Destinations: Literary Landmarks From Jane Austen’s Bath to Ernest Hemingway’s Key West, and while we didn’t find the address of Wonderland in the book, Yorkville’s newest addition comes pretty close.
