Go vintage-treasure hunting in Ottawa this weekend
This Sunday, vintage lovers will be treasure hunting through the 25th annual Ottawa Vintage Clothing Sale at the Fairmont Château Laurier. It’s just one example of how Ottawa’s fashion scene is more than its image of politicos in boring black suits.
The sale brings together private and professional collectors from across Canada for the show, which features pieces that date from the 1900s to the 1970s. Local names to watch out for are Attic Treasures, Cider Antiques and Allegro. Co-founder and organizer Penelope Whitmore says that some collectors plan their whole year around the show and will set special pieces aside to sell there.
The room will be packed with sterling silver brooches, dapper cufflinks, white lace dresses, cashmere shawls, art nouveau brooches and more. Though the sheer size of the showroom can be overwhelming, newcomers can find themselves with an armful of affordable vintage, says Whitmore. “Keep an open mind because your possibilities are endless,” she says. “The clothing is one-of-a-kind.”
November 15, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., Fairmont Château Laurier, 1 Rideau St. Admission for the sale is $8. Non-perishable food items or cash donations will be accepted to help the Ottawa Food Bank.
