Sophie Théallet was awarded the sixth annual CFDA/Vogue Fashion Fund grand prize of $200,000 and a year-long mentorship at last night’s awards dinner. Keynote speaker Alber Elbaz was introduced by Nicole Kidman and said of success: “It’s like a bottle of perfume. You smell it, you don’t sniff it or drink it.” With the career boost that last year’s winner Alexander Wang received, things are looking good for Théallet’s future. The Alaïa-trained designer works out of her Brooklyn home with partner and husband Steven Francoeur and has gained more recognition since dressing the First Lady for Senator Ted Kennedy’s funeral in August. Runners-up Patrick Ervell and jewellery designer Monique Pean each pocketed $50,000. Théallet closed up her speech by saying, “I’m French, so I’m going to try to do my best. Thank you for making my American dreams come true.” [Vogue] [WWD] [Fashionista] [NY Times]
