When then 11-year-old Erika Campbell heard that her dad’s colleague was cycling across Canada in the annual Sears National Kids Cancer Ride, she wanted to put on a fashion show to help raise funds. Luckily she knew someone in the fashion biz–Campbell called her cousin Coco Rocha, who gathered 20 models from Elite agency (and 10 members of the local fire department) for a show at the Roxx nightclub in Barrie, Ontario. The now-annual event has become Strut for a Cure and its second year is coming to Toronto and throwing a blow-out party on May 27 at the Berkeley Church. FASHION is thrilled to be a presenting sponsor for the event, where every single dollar from ticket sales and donations is being given to the Coast to Coast Against Cancer Foundation (coasttocoastagainstcancer.org).
So what’s in store? Jeanne Beker is playing emcee for the night and Rocha has again invited her friends from Elite to walk with her in a runway show, outfitted in London-based Canadian designer Todd Lynn‘s Fall 2010 collection. (Lynn will be there in person as well.) There will be DJs spinning throughout the event, but the headline act is Martina Sorbara and Dan Kurtz’s electropop outfit, Dragonette. The Juno Award-winning band has worked with Cyndi Lauper, they’re in the Lollapalooza lineup this summer, and they’ll no doubt deliver a fiery set at Strut for a Cure. The $95 ticket price also includes an open bar and nibblies. To pick up a ticket (they’ll go fast), visit strutforacure.com.
