It’s the afternoon after the Chanel cruise show and the party animals are just beginning to stir.

In true St. Tropez form, Karl Lagerfeld threw a bash that went on into the wee hours, with free-flowing champagne, lots of Lady Gaga on the soundtrack, and models in full celebration mode (and flats) to fête Chanel makeup creative director Peter Phillips‘ birthday.

The action took place at VIP Room, a nightclub just steps from the port where the billionaire yacht-owners had a perfect perch for the show earlier in the evening.

Red director’s chairs lined the pavement in front of Senequier, a popular café known for its killer iced coffee The VIPs mingled with Vanessa Paradis, Diane Kruger and the MisShapes’ Leigh Lezark.

It was a scene Coco would have loved. Her signatures everywhere you looked: Double Cs swinging from a chain-handled straw tote, gold wheat sheaves embroidered on a navy jacket, a front row full of bouclé suits and quilted purses in every shade of leather, some beaded with sequins or camellias.

The show opened with a seven-piece New Orleans-style brass band, and the models, including Crystal Renn, Abbey Lee and Karolina Kurkova, arrived in vintage mahogany boats. The clothes had a ’70s vibe: butterscotch denim, striped maxi knits, floaty pastels, trippy prints, string bikinis, ruffled pajama looks, perforated leather hot pants and tweedy jackets with bell sleeves.

The show closed with Georgia May Jagger roaring down the runway on the back of a motorcycle. Lagerfeld followed in purple jacket, grey studded gloves and wide purple tie–a final missive for those who hadn’t caught the ’70s drift.
