First look: Ewanika’s fall collection is full of relaxed, but grown-up pieces

Fall heralds a new simplicity–all uncluttered sportswear, fuss-free silhouettes and neutral palettes. Taking a peek through Ewanika‘s (1083 Bathurst St., Toronto, 416-927-9699, ewanika.ca) fall lookbook, we were happy to locate a collection’s worth of these easy-going grown-up pieces. This kind of pared-back chic is nothing new for Toronto designer Trish Ewanika–polished and tailored looks have been her schtick for far more than a season. The fall palette is subdued–a single floral-print silk breaks up the charcoal, camel, blue-grey hues–and the pencil skirts, suit jackets and sheath dresses are the very definition of wardrobe staples. If it sounds like a snooze, it’s not: yummy fabrics and just-so details make these pieces must-haves. Our picks: A pencil skirt with a single slash pocket and a strip of grosgrain ribbon down the side; a relaxed wool shirt jacket with a slight sheen; and a long-sleeve camel-hued sheath and a buttoned-up cardigan dress–the last two with nary an embellishment beyond deep Celine-esque patch pockets.

Years ago when I lived off College, I bought an amazing and simple sheath dress. At the time, I was pretty broke, so I got it on sale. But I proceeded to wear it over and over for years! I don’t live on College anymore but thanks for reminding me of this awesome place. Especially now that I have an income!

Ewanika is the mainstay of my wardrobe. From work to parties to everyday polish, the clothing is consistently perfect for my needs. It isn’t often one finds a boutique where the designer is onsite for consultation and the atelier is in the back of the retail space. (I love hearing the hum of the sewing machine when I’m in there trying on the latest collection!) If you’re serious about tailoring, fabric, and designs that flatter all angles, I highly recommend Ewanika.
