Fashion news: Denis Gagnon’s newest projects
Montreal designer Denis Gagnon (www.denisgagnon.ca) gave FASHION the exclusive inside scoop that he has created the new uniforms at Le Place d’Armes (www.hotelplacedarmes.com), one of Old Montreal’s most stylish boutique hotels.
Expect to see the concierge, reception and valet staff at Place d’Armes in their new Gagnon apparel as early as mid-March. The look is said to be simple and classic: all black with white shirts. Women will wear fitted skirts and vests embellished with dainty leopard print scarves, while men’s jackets will bear subtle, mais oui, zipper detailing à la Gagnon. The new partnership comes on the heels of other juicy gossip that Gagnon will open a new atelier/boutique this spring under the same roof of another chic address, Le Petit Hôtel (www.petithotelmontreal.com) (both properties are owned by the Antonopoulos Group) which is situated on Saint-Paul Street West, the oldest, and most likely the most romantic, thoroughfare in the city. (The original cobblestones were laid out in 1672.) Gagnon’s new space was conceptualized by Montreal industrial designer and artist Étienne Hotte (www.etiennehotte.com) who will outfit the interior in sleek black and white.
This is not the first time that a Montreal designer has fashioned the uniforms for hotel staff. You may remember Gagnon’s contemporary Marie Saint Pierre collaborated with Hôtel Le Germain not too long ago. Similarly, Philippe Dubuc lent his edgy vision to the wait staff at Cube restaurant (now defunct) when it opened in June 2001 at Hôtel Saint-Paul. More recently, Dubuc has created the service attire for hip newcomer Bistro Nüvü in the Gay Village.
