A whirlwind weekend in Munich with Thomas Sabo and Katy Perry

While the runways were heating up in Milan, I headed to another Euro hotspot, Munich, for a 48-hour whirlwind weekend with German mega-jeweler, Thomas Sabo. Touching down in the city after a rather sleepless direct flight, I was whisked down the Autobahn—the famed German highway with no speed limit—to the ultra modern (and ultra amazing!) Hotel Louis. I uncrossed my eyes long enough to take in the amazing view of the Marienplatz city centre, the bustling Viktualienmarkt across the street filled with gourmet meats, artisanal cheeses and vintage wines and then it was lights out until dinner that evening.

Up and at em for dinner with the Thomas Sabo crew at the part-resto part-club, Heart—all servers don black heart temp tattoos—I chowed down on the best seared tuna I have ever had (soy sauce and butter… who knew!) and spotted the strangest looking cocktail, which resembled C-Plus in a wine goblet. As I find out, the fizzy looking wonder is actually a Spritz—part Prosecco, part Aperol orange liqueur with a top off of seltzer. Obsessed.

After a bit of sightseeing the next morning—I caught the Rathaus Glockenspiel in action!—it was off to a press lunch with Sabo and the brand’s new ambassador, Katy Perry. Dressed in a pale peach scallop-edged leather t-shirt dress—rather understated for her—Perry accessorized with a mammoth charm bracelet and several necklaces… but of course! Like the charming cartoon goddess that she is, the singer was in full form—joking about her husband, Russell Brand, owning more jewels than she, idealizing the cat lady aesthetic and needing a nap. “Do you have a nap charm?”

While the cameramen were busy snapping photos of Perry at lightning speed, I ogled the spring collections. It seemed as if the singer’s signature quirk had been infused into virtually all of the pieces—from the red and pink skulls with enamel horns to the green crystal encrusted frog ring to the oversized black with neon watches to match!

Later that night, it was time for the brand’s blowout bash, celebrating Perry’s induction, a new watch collection and five years of the brand’s signature Charm Club. Only in the blockbusters have I seen a space as tricked out in highlighter colours as this. Looking as if one of the brand’s charm bracelets had exploded onto the walls and ceiling in the best way possible, Twilight Zone swirls, neon skulls and hearts were strewn throughout the room. Pop-art surrealism was a big thing that night, as couches appeared as hot lips and hors d’oeuvres like lollipops!

After mingling with a bunch of “big in Germany” celebs and dancing into the night to the translated tunes of a similarly big German band—Jan Delay, a supposedly ironic name?—it was off to sleep before boarding my homebound flight early the next morning, bleary eyed once again. A quick run through the duty free shop and auf wiedersehen, Munich! (sorry, I just had to…)
