Ones to watch: Dion Lee brings down under style into the mainstream

At just 25, Dion Lee is the latest face in a crop of designers helping to make Australia a driving force in contemporary fashion. After graduating from Fashion Design at the Sydney Institute of Technology in 2007, Lee has already impressed the likes of Net-A-Porter who began carrying his line last year.
Known for his incredibly sharp tailoring combined with playful prints, past collections have had an emphasis on jackets, jaunty trousers. With his most recent collection for Spring 2010/11 (a season which translates to fall in our fair country but is carried currently), Lee made clear efforts to create an image of a softer and feminine woman. Having secured the famed Sydney Opera House for his show, he showcased the palest shades of blue and lilac alongside contrastingly smoky, swirling black and white Rorschach inkblots alongside the extravagant settling which had more than one attendee utterly spellbound. Lee further softened the overall feel of his collection with a flurry of gorgeously draped skirts and dresses in the softest, most feminine of fabrics. Intertwined tufts of grey and white, sky blue and black gave way to skater-style, pleated skirts.
Keep an eye out for Lee’s prints on PYTs and leggy ingénues everywhere… it’s only a matter of time.
