Kelly Osbourne hit Toronto yesterday for the launch of the new Material Girl collection. We’ve got the Q&A!
Metal princess, sometimes singer, and TV personality Kelly Osbourne’s adding a new title to her list: poster girl. The new face of Madonna and daughter Lourdes Leon’s clothing line, Material Girl, was in Toronto yesterday for the fall collection launch at the Bay to partake in a fan-filled Q&A session with eTalk’s Tanya Kim—during which she heralded the likes of Gaga for “putting bravery back into fashion.” Known for her call-it-like-it-is honesty and humour, Osbourne was in full force yesterday when we chatted before her appearance, describing her style as the drunk Marilyn Monroe and poking fun at the perfumers behind her scent for the day: “It’s by a company called Mûre et Musc, and it’s really spelled like ‘extreme,’ but they try to make it fancy by [pronouncing] it differently.”

How did you get involved with Material Girl?
I met Lourdes when Jay-Z played Hyde Park in London a few years ago. I felt just as excited to meet her as she was to meet me. I was like, “Oh, my god, this is Lourdes.” A few months later I got a phone call asking me if I wanted to [get involved] and I said yes without them even finishing. I couldn’t say no to Madonna. If you do then you’re a dumb*ss.
What do you like most about the line?
The thing about Material Girl is that there is something for every kind of girl. And I love the fact that it’s so affordable that anyone could get these looks. It’s something that I’d rather be a part of than, say, doing something for some huge brand where it’s like, “Look what I’m wearing that you could never get!”
You’re getting a little more into fashion now. Is this kind of a new thing?
I’ve always been into fashion, but nobody cares what a fat girl thinks about fashion.
How so?
It’s always been a huge passion of mine, and I learned a lot from my mother. People think that I might not know what I’m talking about, but it is one thing that I will stand up and say I really do know what I’m talking about! It was just recently that I [worked on] one of Harvey Weinstein’s new shows and he said, “I can’t believe how much you actually do know about fashion,” and I was like, “Well…yeah”
How would you describe your style?
I like to call it the drunk Marilyn. Because you know what it’s like: it’s classic but a bit messy. I love faux fur with a dress but you’ll see me sitting there with my legs open and hunched over. My mom says, “Close your legs, sit up straight, be a lady.” I’m like “sorry.”
