Style Panel: Some fashionable and some downright bizarre costume ideas to try this Halloween
Our style panel has helped us through tough times—from teaching us how to make the transition from summer to fall to riding our bikes in style—but let’s be honest, as hard of those fashion challenges may be, Halloween is the epitome of a fashion pickle.
You want to be creative, topical and sew cute! So, we’re so thankful for our team of stylin’ homegirls who have come to our rescue and saved Halloween from a store-bought disaster. To say there’s a common thread running through the style panel’s costume decisions would be a lie. We had Christina Cravero of The Style Mogul, take a classic look and created her own take on Katy Perry’s ‘California Girls’. So from jugalettes to Holly Golightly to a serial flasher, take a look at our Panel’s Halloween costumes and get inspired.

Halifax | Short Presents
Halloween is one night of the year where it is completely acceptable to push fashion boundaries and throw all caution to the wind. For one night you get to play a different part and be someone else for a little while without consequence or judgment from others. Halloween should be about fun, exploration, and imagination.
Maybe the skirts get shorter and the make up gets heavier, but it’s all part of the fun. My advice for choosing costumes is to first match your costume to your event, and then really devote some thinking time into coming up with a costume.
For Halloween dressing be practical (to an extent), use your imagination, have fun, experiment, commit to your character, and wear fake eye lashes everything goes with fake eye lashes :)

Toronto | The Style Mogul
After living in Portugal for two years, Carnaval was a huge event! Imagine, five days straight of dressing up in the best costumes, which were all pretty much DIY. After moving back to Toronto, I became addicted to DIY Halloween costumes and this Katy Perry “California Girls” costume is my ultimate favourite! This outfit is very easy to make, all you need is a white body suit, LOTS of candy, a purple wig, a headband with a heart on it, and obviously a colourful tutu.
Just a cute and wholesome juggalo look! You can basically wear anything you want—I opted for a circus-esque Acne blouse and rave boots, with a casual leather fetish collar. All you need is clown face paint and a bottle of Faygo and you’re ready to look like the littlest juggalette!

NYC via Vancouver | A Haute Mess
This is the result of a totally unplanned costume and a 10-days-too-early Halloween party that occurred last weekend. I wasn’t sure I would be able to make it, so when I knew I could, I needed something quick. Naturally, I looked at my closet and thought, “what do I have already that I can turn into a costume?” and my options were simple: I could wear head to toe denim and a bow-tie and go as a Canadian tuxedo (or Justin Timberlake at the 2001 American Music Awards) or, I could wear a trenchcoat and go as a serial flasher. Why I went with Serial Flasher, I don’t know.
So, I wore a trench coat, black socks with dogs in Santa hats, high tops, a baseball cap, and spent all of $3 on my nose and glasses. I thought I was so clever, and hilarious, to have pulled this costume together. I was also wrong: everyone thought I was Inspector Gadget. Why didn’t I think of that?
