Paris: Sophia Kokosalaki, Jean Paul Gaultier and Roger Vivier Fall 2009

I suppose there could be worse jobs in the world than to have to start your day with a tour through the über-chic Roger Vivier showroom to get a sneak peek at fall’s treats. “Catherine” (as in Deneuve) asked Bruno (as in Frisoni, the Vivier designer) for a new ballet flat,” the PR rep tells me, “so he made her one!” (Hint: it has a pointy-toe with a slight platform). A deck of cards is the theme for the season, and I don’t want to give to much away, but I really heart it in spades.
A sunny day outside Sophia Kokosalaki made it easy pickings for the style paparazzi as the fashion lunatics lounged outside in the Jardin des Tuileries. Could it be? A woman in a Hudson’s Bay striped jacket in Paris? I yell after her. “It was my Mom’s from 1973!” she confirms. Kokosalaki’s collection hit a lot of themes I’m seeing all over town from “bigger names.”
Cruised through Première Classe, the massive accessories trade show, hunting for treasures to bring back to you my pretties, and then on to the mob scene at Jean Paul Gaultier.

Animal rights protesters kept up a ruckus outside, and the fashion animals caused their own ruckus inside with no shortage of mad stampeding to try and get into an overbooked venue. The cravates rouges fortunately feel sorry for mini-mice like me as they watch me get shoved around by mean, giant Spaniards and they just let me in. Spotted: Unlikely Fashion It Girl (and cover of new style bible Love) Beth Ditto. The show started with a scene of whores and their misters, and The sex (and S&M!) flavour continued throughout—though I suppose I shouldn’t have been surprised, seeing as the invite came covered in fishnet stockings.
Trend watch: Paris is obsessed with shoulders—pointy shoulders, ruffly shoulders, sticky-uppy shoulders, massive fans on shoulders, visible shoulder-pads under tops and dresses…
Also: Cropped leather jackets. Everywhere. Like Citytv. But better, much, much better.
