Louis Vuitton show for Spring 2012 opened with the tinkling of a music box and the rising of a scrim to reveal a carousel carrying girls in pale dresses on cream-coloured ponies. It might have seemed a saccharine set-up, but such a response could just be a bad case of not getting it. The news of the season is gentle news. That’s what Marc Jacobs got so right at Louis Vuitton. All the white and those whitened pastels—a key colour trend, favoured by both traditionalists such as Ralph Lauren and more experimental types such as Christopher Kane and Hussein Chalayan—might have appeared to be borrowed from a bag of miniature marshmallows. But the candied palette was not there simply to satisfy a sweet tooth. It also appeals to a Bluetooth appetite when dished out in fabrics that are marvels of modern technology—things like foam organza, silk cellophane and laser-cut leatherette. For the theory-minded, it’s tempting to conclude from the fact that we live in times when you see toddlers dressed in skull patterns and infants swaddled in camo-print blankets that it’s only logical their moms should start playing with pink and baby blue. Today, the WWF is teaming up with grannies nationwide for National Sweater Day—a day toraise awareness about energy conservation. Led by spokesgranny Gladys, in her poinsettia-patterned knit, the campaign is meant to persuade the thermostat-inclined (guilty as charged) to don a sweater and turn down the heat. As Gladys says, grannies are “natural energy conservers” who put on a sweater when they get cold. And as we learn in the hilarious campaign video, you can sign up to receive a phone call from an on-staff granny who will nag gently remind you (as grannies do) to turn down the heat. Ready or not, Kanye West’s PR agency,Karla Otto, has confirmed that his much-talked-about, self-titled collection will be returning to Paris Fashion Week on March 6.
On Sunday, the rapper-turned-designer tweeted, “Pardon me…do you have crepe chiffon?” Yeezy does red carpet? Might be a step in the right direction in comparison to his last production, which has been described as “being subjected to an hour long MRI scan—but not as much fun.”
So what do we know about the line so far? Well, West made clear in his now infamous Twitter rant that the name of his self-funded line is Kanye West and not DW. Also, he’s been working in London and getting some much-needed help from big-time designers but details of the show have been kept under wraps.
