Pop goes the city
If you were wondering why Montreal was invaded by so many hipsters last week, I have the answer: Pop Montreal (popmontreal.com).
For its seventh edition, fall’s coolest cultural event offered a diverse array of shows and events: from Nick Cave to soul singer Irma Thomas and the Brazilian Girls’ happy pop. Lovely, I say, although the late start of most events didn’t exactly fit my rather rigid schedule. But looking at the hyped-up youngsters with asymmetrical haircuts, mustaches or plaid dresses running from one venue to the next, it seems some people didn’t get any sleep last week!
Still hungry for art? Go for the Festival du Nouveau Cinema’s (October 8 to 1, nouveaucinema.ca) sharp selection of indie movies from around the world. Here are a few of my must-see films: Atom Egoyan’s Adoration, Wim Wenders’s Palermo Shooting, Makhmalbaf’s Two-Legged Horse and Wong Kar Wai’s Ashes of Time Redux. And don’t miss the festival’s usual plethora of conferences, concerts and cool parties.
Fashionistas might prefer to stay home all week, ’cause fave Laurier boutique Bille (shown, 141 Laurier St., West, 514-270-5415) just launched a shopping website (billieboutique.com) with oh-so-covetable marvels from K Karl Lagerfeld, Filippa K, Tara Jarmon, Tiger of Swede, and of course, the more than useful Hunter Boots.
