Khaki cool lands at Gap today

Khakis cool? Alexander Wang says so. The designer is one of a trio of promising names who have created pieces for the third round of Design Editions, the CFDA/Vogue Fashion Fund‘s partnership with Gap. Wang, winner of the 2008 prize, joins the runners-up, Brooklyn’s Vena Cava and milliner Albertus Swanepoel, in cooking up micro collections in that Gap holy of holies. The collections hit stores today, hot on the heels of last night’s CFDA Awards where Wang took home the Swarovski Award for Womenswear.
Made in a fabric usually considered more camp than city, these khaki pieces swing toward urban with bold prints, metal zips and pretty tucks. Our best bets are Wang’s motorcycle trench ($94) complete with tough snaps and buckles, Vena Cava’s printed sleevless dress ($94) with a big chunky zipper, and Swanepoel’s girlie feather-and-ribbon fedora ($45).
Design Editions is available at the following Gap stores: Toronto: Eaton Centre and 60 Bloor St., W.; Montreal: Eaton Centre; B.C.: Pacific Centre and 1121 Robson St.; Alberta: Chinook Centre and West Edmonton Mall.
