Game on: 4 steps on how to wear sport utility

The race is on to find this season’s most sleek, athletic-inspired pieces. “Sport was touched on in almost every collection,” says Nicholas Mellamphy, creative director of The Room at the Bay. He points to Anthony Vaccarello’s use of tech fabrics and utility details, Antonio Berardi’s strong colour and stripe detailing, Yves Saint Laurent’s “sporty but elegant” eveningwear jumpsuits and J. Mendel’s play on the old-school sports jersey. The question is: Can sporty wear be made office-appropriate? Mellamphy laces up to give us a pep talk.

KEEP IT SIMPLE
“Keep the accessories quiet and minimalist: a simple sandal with a sturdy heel, clean bangles and a bag that speaks to quality rather than flash.”

FOCUS ON COLOUR AND FABRIC
“Look for pieces that incorporate a slash of bright or neon colour, details such as zips, mesh and knitted waistbands, and fabrics such as jersey and neoprene.”

GET THE KEY ITEMS
“Try an anorak or a zip bomber jacket and a pair of shorts. The easiest piece to add would be a striped jersey or knit top.”

JUST DO IT, AT ANY AGE
“Age is a state of mind. The sporty trend does lend itself to styles that we may associate with youth because of the active element, but beyond that you will find pieces that are made from easy-to-wear, durable fabrics that allow more support. It’s all about performance.”
