Kerry Connelly gets Gorgeous

comments

may09kc_lg“Most women have one wedding day. I feel like I get to have three!”

Kerry Connelly, media professional-turned-mezzo-soprano, is referring to that princessy feeling she gets from singing on stage wearing luscious Hugo Nicholson gowns while pursuing her dream of becoming a professional performer. Sounds rather fitting for a show called Gorgeous. Kerry answered a few of our questions before hitting the stage tonight at the Jane Mallet Theatre (St. Lawrence Centre for the Arts, 27 Front St. E, tickets available at 416-366-7723, $50).

What was the idea behind…

The clothes you are wearing on stage?

I knew that I wanted different looks and feels for the characters that I am playing. For act one, I needed something that was very classic, almost Audrey Hepburn-esque. For act two, I was looking for the perfect gown that would emulate the mood and the essence of the opera arias that I am singing. I am thrilled with the beautiful pristine blue gown I am wearing. I can really move in it.

The jewellery?

I spent an afternoon with the staff at John de Jong (60 Bloor St. W, Suite 406, Toronto, 416-923-1243, jdj-jewellery.com) looking through tons of jewellery for the perfect pieces that would match with the ensemble. The staff was incredible, and helped me find jewellery that really complements the gowns.

And the hair?

We spent two afternoons with Hair on the Avenue (112 Avenue Rd., Toronto, 416-922-0112, hairontheavenue.ca). We discussed whether I would wear my hair up or down, whether it would be casual or elegant. I really feel that I’ve surrounded myself with some exceptional people who are experts at what they do.

What are some of your favourite beauty products?

I’m wearing all M.A.C. I’m just delighted to be wearing their makeup and supporting them because I think that they truly understand the difference between day makeup and stage makeup, and there is a difference.

How would you describe your everyday style?

I like to have self-expression through my style. I would say that I am classic and elegant, and I think that is reflected in the show tonight. The wonderful accessories I am wearing bring out the different colours in my personality, and particularly in characters that I play.
