The Final Exit: Maryam

Photography by John van der Schilden
Why’d you have to go and make things so complicated, Maryam? After delayed passports, missed shoots, a gecko and a torn dress, the judges finally cut our sentimental favourite loose.
Which part of this experience was the most fun? Which was the most stressful?
“The fun part was doing photo shoots and the most stressful is the elimination and standing there and getting judged.”
Anything you wish you could do over?
“I wouldn’t do anything over. I tried my best.”
Do you think it was your turn to go? If not, who should have gone?
“I think it was my turn. I thought that I deserved to be top 3 but top 4 is good, too. I’m happy.”
Are you still planning to pursue a career in modeling?
I’m planning to go back to school and send my portfolio to the agencies that I like and see what happens.

Oh, I loved Maryam, too. I didn’t really notice how terrific her body was until last night — not too skinny and quite well-toned.
What’s funny is how I blogged about how badly Jeanne Beker is coming across this season. Then I went to read comments on a couple of fan forums and everyone is spitting venom at her after the last couple of episodes. I thought that I might be in the minority, but I’m not; she’s really not doing herself any favours with her crass commentary.
I just want to say that I really think Maryam should’ve stayed in the competition and was really hoping she would have won. Not that the other girls don’t, but I believe Maryam had the most potential, best looks and ‘attitude’ for the industry. After seeing her go last night, I don’t even really wanna watch the rest of the show. I really, really want to see her go further now that she was dismissed and make it as the next ‘CoCo Rocha’ without Canada’s Next Top Model!!!
The way that the other three girls ganged up on Maryam was absolutely disgusting. All of them have shown themselves to be ugly through and through- and to make fun of the speech mannerisms of someone who doesn’t have English as a first language and is new to the country?
None of the final three deserve to win, for the very reason that it would be an embarrassment for them to represent Canada. This isn’t Canada’s Next Top Bigot!
I think the judges made a HUGE mistakes cutting Maryam out of the competition. The other three girls have not shown any growth at all. Week after week they have shown us pretty faces and not much more, other than may be showing how typically immature and catty they can be. Maryam has had the least amount of experience and exposure but has shown the most growth. She had one problem: not having a passport that would have worked itself out by the time this competition was over any way. Any of the other girls faced by the challanges she has had to face would have broken up and given up. Instead she took every missed opprtunity and turned it around. She has brains and beauty: a fact that has been proven by her taking the lessons of one week and use in it to change and grow in the other. The worst insult was when Jay said theat a complicated life was harder to overcome than lack of confidence!! Where did he get his psychology degree? Maryam’s fortitude and back bone would help her overcome any thing, even lack of passport. I bet that our little blue eyed blond may find it harder to grow a back bone by next week!
Rock On Maryam: your grace, generousity and yes beauty will make you shine no matter what you decide to do.
I am out of watching the rest of this show.
The last episode made me feel nauseated! No matter what happens next, one of the three truly bigoted stupid and ugly girls are going to represent Canada’s fashion industry. So what is the point? Maryam was a breath of fresh air with her truly remarkable beauty and brains. Did any one else notice her bringing food for the girls in the hot tub who had just ridiculed her and going back to get her a fork? The stupid blond had the gull to tell her I love you after she had just ripped her apart and made fun of her English. She has only been in the country for two years and she is miles ahead of the all of the remaining bigots. I would love to see if they could do the same competition in French and come out with half the poise and wit of Maryam. It does not even have to be another country, Just Canada’s second language!!
I agree with the rest of the posters. Maryam was the best model AND person on the show this year. She was both a delight to watch and a good example for girls interested in fashion. She was understated and more mature than the rest (who I agree are incredibly ugly on the inside). I am also totally disinterested in the rest of the show. I only watched it because Maryam had that special quality that made her a joy to watch. Now it’s just a bunch of ignorant and idiotic girls running around in high heels. Bye Maryam, it was really wonderful to watch you on the show, and good luck with everything. You will rock anything you do!
omg myryam waz d best out of alld girlz she has an sexy innocent look dat make u love her shes prety & will alwayz be prety in my mind she is cntm iloveyou myryam 4 ever btw i hate linsay so much shes so mean!
maryam you were truly the best and i would only tune in the last few weeks because you seemed so genuine and the most natural model! you were really creative with the gecko shoot and i am really stunned by how rude nikita, linsay and meaghan were about you. its a shame that one of them will be the winner but i think you will go far into the modelling world if you wish, without CNTM! you can do it! let your grace, education, intelligence and natural beauty continue to shine! you are an inspiration
If this is Canada’s interpretation of being top, then Canada’s gonna have very tough days ahead. After watching what they did to Maryam, those three remaining girls just make me wanna throw up right into their face!
As lovely a girl as Maryam is, she is not ‘top model’ material. And really, she could not take direction if her life depended on it!
While you could say the other models treated her cruelly, in reality, they were just being FUNNY, and it made for entertaining television. Their impressions of Maryam were, you have to admit, spot-on.
“Don’t touch the toilet paper dresses, just don’t touch them!”.
“Wha?”
See? FUNNY.
s!
How can people say what those three despicable finalists did to Maryam wasn’t awful? They bullied Maryam, mocked her accent, insulted her background (ex: Maryam’s uncomfortable prancing around in her undies in the house b/c of her upbringing). Yet, Meaghan and Nikita and Linsay tried to backpedal and said it was all in good fun. If it was, why did you feel guilty about it?
I just can’t see how anyone who has a smidgen of compassion will be able to support the ruthlessness that they have incited towards Maryam.
I think Maryam was and excellent model but she is not ready for this buisness yet. It is commen sense to have a passport wehn your a model plus she had alot of time to get it before the show, and after the first time she couldn’t go. Plus she ripped a dress! The lady stood there and told them do no touch the dress atleast 5 times, she told them you cannot sit, you cannot breathe in this dress. Even when there were 2 people helping Lydnsay put on the dress, she still went and ripped it. What I thought Nakita and Meghan did was not exceptable. I think that if Maryam was ready for this buisness she would’ve won hads down.
Actually, Maryam HAD a passport but it expired- in a recent interview she said it was one of the things she and her mother made absolutely sure to pack. Being the honest person she was, she told Jay and the crew and they let her stay, saying that when it comes in, she could go, so it was assumed the passport would arrive shortly.
Anyway, Maryam should have stayed- or the judges should at least watch some of the footage in the house and see how ugly the girls actually are and how Lindsay deserves to be attacked by a pack of wild animals. I mean really, when she implied complications to maryam when she began tapping ehr temple, asking if she understood- to which maryam replied that she needed only to be told once. I think is the only fianle in the NTM series which I really didn’t look forward to.
I was appalled by the behaviour of the two models in the “confession booth”—out of a sense of decency and respect that they refused to show for Maryam I will not mention them by name!!! I was ashamed to say that I am a Calgarian after that performance. I will say that I did not see the same out of Linsay. I personally think that it should have come down to Linsay (the girl from the reserve!!!) and Maryam (the girl new to Canada!!!)— the other two were a disappointment with their attitudes. I have read blogs criticizing the industry for portraying the idea that you have to be skinny—well maybe they should be less concerned with being twigs and learn some manners and respect, this image will not be accepted by Europeans. And I thought the industry had opened the doors for diversity in that it didn’t have to be a caucasian girl with blond hair? What happened there?
I think the question is not whether or not Maryam’s elimination was fair. The question is whether or not the entertainment (or as one of the comments above puts it the “funny”) side of the show should let this happen UNPUNISHED? So, what message are we communicating to all those kids out there in the school or neighborhood who happen to have a kid like Maryam around? That we approve of making fun and belittling of people who do not share the same background with us?
Exactly Darren, those are my thoughts too! Unfortunately there was an overwhelming air that she was not accepted. I read another article that said the same day she was eliminated was the day her passport came through. It also said that she already had one that expired. I know from personal experience with a citizenship card that even the smallest change can throw the department in Ottawa for a loop—to update my pic took them 6 months, whereas being Canadian through the citizenship card, the passport took only 2 weeks. I was born of Canadian parents while they were in the military stationed in Europe.
Some say that they can get a passport in 2 days—were they born here? did a company expedite it for them (preferably one with lots of money)? did they miss the terrorism and economy? I have loved fashion for many years but looked down on the back-stabbing, rude, selfish attitudes that seem to be prevalent throughout. What happened to tolerance, good sportsmanship, and diplomacy? I hope that just like the world of American Idol that the talented people succeed despite the arrogance that trys to block them. All the best Maryam!!! Not all people are self-serving and ignorant—keep working at it!
MARIAM WAS THE MOST GORGEOUSE EXOTIC BEAUTI’VE EVER SEEN!SHE TRULY REPRESENTED THE EAST AND AS SOMEBODY ARRIVING FROM A DIFFERENT CORNER OF THE WORLD WITH LITTLE LANGUAGE KNOWLEGE,SHE DID AN AMAZING JOB.SHE WAS SWEET,CARING AND HONEST AND DID NOT DESERVE THE ATTITUDE SHE GOT FROM THE 3 GIRLS.THEY MAKE ME SICK!LOVED YOU MARIAM
so sexy
Yes, yes, yes. The top three girls were obviously put an envy to Maryam and they became freaked out about her. And that was how they did to won the game, by embarass themselves
Just watched canada’s next top model cycle 3 in my country..I love Maryam!!!! I’ll always support her!! I hate the top 3 girls..Maryam just trying to be nice..geeezzzzz!!! The way that the other 3 girls ganged up on Maryam was absolutely disgusting,,
yes!! yes!! yes!!
me too,,just watched this show in my country indonesia,,and I really love maryam,,she’s a sweet beautiful girl with a good manners..she has a very kind heart,,and,,meaghan,,linsay or nikita???duh!!they’re just bunch of stupid girls..
I know I was pretty late to comment here but they just have a re-run CNTM Cycle 3 and yes I have to agree that those 3 ladies are totally cruel and disgusting. They are the example of people who likes to bully. Shame of you girls. Go Maryam you are the best!
maryam is so nice i love her because shes so sincere.. can anyone please tell me what is her status right now? is she still into modelling? i hope she will be blessed with good things.. i wish i have known more people like her.. she is so nice
Yeah… Watched the re-run. And definitely agreed that Nikita and Meaghan had lied, and so Linsay… I think they envied Maryam’s ability and strength…
They ganged up to cut out Maryam, and Jay was so stupid not assessing the real situation, Australia’s Next Top Model assessed and even warned their bitchketeers… Jay, what a shame!
I just watched the re-run of CNTM Cycle 3 of Maryam’s elimination. I can’t imagine what are those girls thinking about Maryam? They were so mean to Maryam and they just blamed everything on her. I know that Maryam should face many problems during the show, but I think her determination was showing the REAL MODEL. Didn’t have a passport was a pretty big mistake, but she showed us how serious she was in that competition.
Besides that, Maryam still kept her culture in Canada. Maybe in Canada, looking the girls wear tank top or anything is usual. But, Maryam comes from different culture (similar to me, from the east or Asia) and she can struggle in the different culture. I think the three girls should understand why Maryam always wore closed top to bottom.
In my opinion, Linsay, Meaghan, and Nikita cannot do what Maryam does, but Maryam can DO what they do.
Her great attitude (helping anyone who needs help, cheered Meaghan up when she got terrible photo shoot, and many more!) really makes her the best model I ever known. Beauty, smart, and great attitude, those are the most wonderful package of a model, and I see it in Maryam’s personality.
I wish Maryam will be successful as a model after completing her study.
I was so sad to see Maryam eliminated. Especially after seeing how she brought food to the girls in the hot tub AFTER they had been making fun of her.
They were cruel and it was so uncool. Nikita was awful. She made fun of Jill, then Rebeccah, then Maryam – I guess she always just needs a target for her nastiness. I cannot stand Nikita.
As far as the tissue thing with the dress – Maryam should NOT have touched the dress BUT I also think the girls should NOT have ganged up on her. There must have been some envy there – they knew Maryam was tough competition.
I don’t like any of the top 3 and don’t want any of them to win. They are all nasty. I liked Heather a LOT – she was pretty and also sweet and I was sorry she was eliminated. I also liked Tara. And of course Maryam.
I think if it was up to two of the judges (the supermodel and the photographer) Maryam would still be there. For some reason Jeanne had it out for her, though.
