A black carpet, sprinkled with male models in white tuxes, beckoned guests to the second floor of the Bay Downtown Vancouver for the Thursday night grand opening of The Room, the department store’s second den of high fashion. Erdem Moralioglu and Brian Atwood—both on their first visit to Vancouver—Jason Matlo, Monika Deol, and Jessica Stam (to name a few) were among the crowd of well-dressed revellers air kissing, clinking glasses, and noshing on Hawksworth Restaurant–made canapés.

The light, airy retail space designed by George Yabu and Glenn Pushelberg, the same Canadian interiors duo that re-imagined the Toronto location two years ago, is a stunning 23,000 square feet featuring 35 fashion brands, including Proenza Schouler, Christopher Kane, Mary Katrantzou and those of the designers in attendance.

“Have a little champagne, a little chit-chat, sell some shoes,” said the dashing Atwood about his party modus operandi, “I love what The Room is about. The selection and quality of the designers is right on.” Counting himself, we’re sure, and Erdem too. Moralioglu tipped his specs to The Room’s creative director, “Nicholas Mellamphy was the first person to bring me to Canada,” and went on to praise Vancouver’s scenic splendours, noting, “It’s so beautiful. Just the way the city is centred with all the mountains around it.” Inspiration for a future collection perhaps?
