Word: Intello-chic
Meaning: High-brow studies rendered stylish by design or by association.
Usage: “What distinguishes these 10 [literary journals] is that they’re not only intello-chic statements for your side table. They’re also really good reads.” — The New York Times T Style Magazine
You should know it because: I’m ambivalent about the mingling of thought and aesthetics in this kind of Jenna Lyons glasses–wearing, Paris Review tote–carrying way. I say read because it’s good for you, not because it looks good. On the other hand, would I rather you didn’t read at all? Not exactly. Chopping up and suffixing intelligence with “chic,” which means approximately nothing anymore, makes for a Franglais-ism that suggests what you know isn’t as important as how you wear it. In my books, statements aren’t for side tables but for whispered asides in a dark bar with your good-thinking, never mind good-looking, friends.
