Now that S.S. Coachella exists, we have somewhere to wear Cruise collections! Get the scoop and see our 10 fantasy clothing picks
Weezer’s Caribbean cruise sounded unreal and all, but the most recently announced concert-cruise blows Weezer’s out of the water (pun intended): Coachella organizers have just announced that they’ll be taking to international waters this December as S.S. Coachella, a 2,800-person capacity vessel packed full of indie favourites like Hot Chip, Girl Talk and Yeasayer. The ocean landscape is a far cry from the festival’s usual arid locale in Indio, California, and we have a feeling the heat exhaustion, up-to-the-knee mud splatters and disgusting port-a-potties won’t be missed too much (though they may be replaced by seasickness for some).
It will be interesting to see what happens with cruise-goers’ style choices as well. While festival style has become such an established aesthetic that lines like H&M have even based collections off of it, we’re hoping that moving the festival to a floating island will result in a new, luxury-meets-boho hybrid of festival chic and resort wear. The sartorial combinations are endless, really: we’d love to see Chanel’s Versailles-inspired resort collection mixed with a festival staple like fringe, or the graphic Prabal Gurung resort designs pattern-clashed with the festival’s ever-present tribal prints.
Sartorial revamping aside, tickets to the two sailings (the first leaving Dec. 16 to the Bahamas for three days and the second to Jamaica on Dec. 19 for four days) are said to start at about $500 per person for four-person cabins and cap out at $9,000 for a “sky suite” with veranda. The prices include lodging, food and entertainment, but sadly, no bar tab.
If tickets seemed to sell out almost immediately for this year’s festival, we can only imagine how much harder this hot ticket will be to land, especially since LCD Soundsystem’s James Murphy will apparently be doing wine tastings on deck.
