15-year-old jazz singer Nikki Yanofsky is the anti-Cyrus

WWD has an interview today with Montreal’s 15-year-old jazz star (and fashion fiend) Nikki Yanofsky. On a day where breaking news consists of a video of Miley’s 9-year-old sister Noah gyrating to Akon’s “Smack That,” and the two girls’ apparent role model, Lindsay Lohan, is still designing for a major fashion house, Yanofsky is a breath of sane air.
1. She mantra is “age appropriate.” During the story’s accompanying photo shoot, the singer has trouble navigating in a pair of L.A.M.B. stilettos.
“I don’t really wear them yet because I’m not 16,” she says.
Can you imagine one of the Cyrus clan saying “Noah won’t wear a dominatrix costume for Halloween because she’s not 10 yet”?
2. She has good taste. While Yanofsky admits that her closet overfloweth (that, at least, she has in common with Cyrus Spawn, The Elder)–it is filled with Marc Jacobs, Topshop, Chloé and Miu Miu—she is admittedly advanced for a 15-year-old. Miley may have spent her sweet 16 wearing Elie Saab couture at Disneyland (like the princess that she obviously is), but she subsequently revealed to the world that her closet is filled entirely with tank tops. Not that we have a problem with tank tops, but you see the distinction.
3. She’s determined not to be spoiled.
Certainly Yanofsky’s tastes require a grown-up budget, but the singer stresses that she is judicious with her spending. “If I have my eye on something like a Marc by Marc [Jacobs] bag, I would feel spoiled if my parents got it for me,” she says. “Instead, I’ll buy it with the money I earn.”
The only misstep in Yanofsky’s good girl with good clothes persona happens here:
As she tries on a sheer tank, she continues, “I always think, ‘Would Selena Gomez wear that? Would Miley?’
Oh dear. But, wait:
Well maybe Miley isn’t a good example because she dresses old, but you know what I mean.”
Phew.

Nikki,
My wife Marianne and I were very pleased to attend your concert Friday evening, Jan 15 in Mississauga. You have an amazing talent and I was surprised at your stamina. Please stay focused on your schooling and career and please do not overstress your voice. I know that you are putting your heart & soul into your concerts, but please do remember that your loyal fan base admires you greatly and wants you to progress in the developments of your talents and abilities. Do not push yourself and burn out early.
Our very best wishes for your continuing success and good health

If Nikki sounds like a great singer but in this blog, the appearance of her character is diminished by constant comments comparing her to Miley. The focus should be more on her that constantly compared to Miley. It makes this blog sound childish. Talking bad about other people doesn’t make another person better. I’m sorry to have been introduced to an artist that could be really good in this way.
Brilliant. She is so good and Ella Fitzgerald must have picket her to take her place.
