Hot Disc: Woodhands, Remorsecapade
We don’t recommend you sit at home and listen to Woodhands’ Remorsecapade (Paper Bag). Get out and request their songs when you’re at a sweaty dance party—you’ll bounce along with this record’s front loaded punch and intensity.
Woodhands is Dan Werb and Paul Banwatt, an inditronica drum and keytar synth based in Toronto who rock in both drollery and sensibility. On Remoresecapade you’re either having far too much fun, or on the verge of bumming out. On tunes like “CP24,” Werb lets you know that “I’m gonna’ be on CP24, pointing sixteen-hundred roman candles at your door.” It’s relentless, it’s spastic, entirely danceable and lyrically odd.
Incorporating heavy drums and human vocals (of both the sung and screamed sort) Remorsecapade counts off its heavy dance tracks in its opening moments. Recording sans sampling or laptops—just good ole’ fashioned electronica once made by men wearing lab coats—Woodhands maintain analog credibility. Which also lets them kick out their jams live.
Known for their wild-and-sweaty-dance-party shows and their very visceral Heart Attack, their previous release, Woodhands smoothly transition into pretty pop, slower dub rhythms and sentimental love tunes on Remorsecapade. So when you arrive at the utterly pop rendered “Dissembler,” it doesn’t feel forced. It’s hooky and light, and introduces some pretty female vocals. It also plays to a sentimentality that wends its way into the tail end of the album.
“When The Party Is Over” falls into a dub set step, and has some pretty sweet groove. And “I Want To Be Together” is a wispy ballad about falling asleep and dreaming together with your lover. Which is almost like terminating a dance party by playing Barbra Streisand, hence the song “When The Party Is Over.”
