Girls Recap: Hannah heads home to Michigan to ditch her parents, date a pharmacist and blame everyone else for her boredom

Comments

Last week we saw what was hopefully the final nail in the coffee table that was Charlie and Marnie’s chemistry-free relationship. There was also Hannah quitting her job after an ill-fated attempt at a workplace affair and subsequent lawsuit threat, and Jessa exploring her unsmotability while Shoshanna watched on in horror. This week we’ve left behind the mess of the big city to go to Michigan, so Hannah can celebrate her parents’ anniversary with them. Of course, her selfishness tarnishes the lovely weekend that her parents have planned. Hannah thinks that her boredom is a byproduct of hanging out with her parents and being in her old hometown, but really it’s the result of spending so much time thinking about herself. Who wouldn’t be bored with only one thing to think about constantly? Lucky for us, watching Hannah self-obsess isn’t boring, especially when it involves a pre-date pep talk in front of the mirror.

Kate does pastel-pink and Prada while having lunch with (no big deal) two dozen international kings and queens

There was quite the royal gathering today at Windsor Castle, with over two dozen of the world’s other kings and queens (plus a sultan, grand duke and emperor!) celebrating Queen Elizabeth‘s Diamond Jubilee. While the thought of making small talk with a room of very important strangers might make most of us weak in the knees, by all accounts Kate Middleton brought her usual charms to the lunch event. Get a load of the special-edition crowns that Lanvin, Paul Smith, Tiffany and others created for Harrods Diamond Jubilee display

Sixty years on the throne certainly deserves some grand form of recognition, and in Queen Elizabeth II’s case, that means a kingdom-wide jewel-incrusted celebration. As part of the celebration—which already boasts a special-edition Butter London nail polish colour, for one—Harrods commissioned the creation of 31 elaborate, handmade crowns from renowned designers around the globe, to be on display at the store’s famed Knightsbridge location. To mark the occasion, Harrods has swapped its trademark green canopies for stately golden frames, each showcasing one of the designer-created crowns.

Alongside Lanvin, Bvlgari, and even Dom Perignon, some of Britain’s most treasured designers contributed their designs to the crown collection as well, including Paul Smith, whose crown is laden with British memorabilia, and Mulberry, whose “hundreds and thousands” explosion of colour adds a refreshing sense of whimsy.

Quotable: It’s recently come to our attention that Chloë Sevigny hates going to fashion shows

Comments

While she’s certainly one of our favourite people to spot front row, The Sev (as in Chloë Sevigny, who is held in such high regard by fangirls like us that she doesn’t even need to be referenced by her full name) doesn’t even like going. In an interview with BBC Radio, she said:

Kate keeps it casual while watching the princes play polo (and Lupo was there too!)

This weekend Kate cheered on William and Harry at a charity polo match while keeping things casual in a silk shirtdress by UK-based label Libélula. The long sleeve, knee-length look is quickly becoming her signature style, and it seems like Kate’s other must-wear item—sheer tights—are on the way out. Perhaps her choice of shoe inspired the need for bare legs? Kate wore a pair of open-toed Stuart Weitzman wedge espadrilles, which allowed her to walk across the grassy polo fields with ease—and right up to the podium where she gave both princes a kiss after their team won. (Not pictured: many other kisses from Kate and Will’s royal pup Lupo, who also adorably attended the event.) Read more »

Girls Recap: Marnie gets pathetic in a cubbie, Jessa man-eats while Shoshanna watches and Hannah proves that she is really unfit for any and all paying jobs

Comments

Last week’s episode ended with a well-executed vengeance song that made us wish our friends’ boyfriends were in bands so we could get them to sing pages of our diaries. There was also a former camp counselor that refused to do a kitchen raid on Shoshanna’s virginity and Jessa lost her charges but gained some Jeff sympathy. This week delightfully picked back up at Marnie and Hannah’s apartment and showed us the further destruction created by the latter’s diary. It also gave us a glimpse into Charlie’s apartment that is as neat and organized and boring as we imagine the inside of his head to be. But most importantly, we had a sexual harassment stand-off between Hannah and her boss that we’re sure she wanted to sound like Disclosure but came out more Nine to Five.

So. Many. Problems. »

Mad Men Recap: Betty’s back, Don gets a lesson in girl behaviour, Sally learns how to fake cry and Pete can’t stop thinking about Rory Gilmore

She ain’t heavy, she’s just Betty! The last significant taste we got of Mrs. Francis was when she was having a health scare and a sundae. While she’s the focus this ep, the rest of the cast (except Lane, who must be fist fighting in a pub somewhere) gets at least a little time to whine: Pete’s affair with his train bud’s wife is still distracting him when he’s not busy giving New York Times interviews; Ginsberg joins Peggy in some late night sidelining; Don’s back in the office on weekends and seems to be done with his “love leave” now that Megan has resigned; and last week may have been all about the phone booth but this week the elevator gets some major play. Let’s see where everyone is getting off…

Inside The Room Vancouver’s Mary Katrantzou fête: The city’s finest donning Magic Eye prints and designer hints of another possible collab

Photoraphy by Peter Jensen

Pattern princess Mary Katrantzou’s first-ever visit to Vancouver (“We’ve got fantastic weather, and I was expecting gloomy rain!” she enthused in an earlier interview) turned out a colourful crowd at The Room at the Bay last night. A noticeable number of party people sported kaleidoscopic looks from the designer’s new collection, which has gained equal notoriety for its elevation of everyday objects such as spoons and typewriters, as well as its trippy, engrossing patterns reminiscent of Magic Eye images from the ‘90s (a comparison Mary acknowledges with, “Yes, I heard that recently! I wasn’t sure what those magical eye drawings were.”)
