What better day to express our love for the basic blues than on National Denim Day! This street-style favourite provides endless possibilities when it comes to mixing and matching. From classic Calvin’s to Levi’s famous 501’s, this ultimate wardrobe must-have flatters all shapes and sizes. This spring, freshen up your wardrobe with the right accessories to doll up your favourite pair of jeans.

Call us Canadian, but denim on denim has never looked so good. This reliable wardrobe staple can be dressed up or down with the help of sophisticated silhouettes and crisp white accessories. Master of basics and J.Crew creative director, Jenna Lyons, has been known to pair a light-wash denim shirt with ankle-skimming skinny jeans and sky-high stilettos. Equally stylish Canadian tuxedo devotee, Leandra Medine, was recently spotted at New York Fashion Week with a patchwork denim shirt and rhinestone-studded boyfriend jeans. Phillip Lim proved he knew a thing or two about denimology when he sent models down his New York Fashion Week runway in a patchwork ensemble of varying shades of denim and chambray. Take your favourite flared, skinny, and bootcut pieces for a spin because the denim trend is one that’s here to stay.

Target announces latest designer collaboration with 3.1 Phillip Lim

Comments

Here’s some morning news to get the blood flowing. Target has announced its latest designer collaboration and it’s a biggie: 3.1 Phillip Lim! Excitement. Lim’s wears have been high on the covet list since launching his line in 2005, but lately, his It factor seems to be soaring—his bags reached icon status last year (a good indicator that you’ve made it, in label speak) and his Spring 2013 collection virtually defined the season’s grunge trend alongside seasoned mastermind, Dries Van Noten.

The 3.1 Phillip Lim for Target collection will launch in Canada on September 15 (our first full fledged Target designer collab!) and will feature a sure-to-be-amazing range of clothing, accessories, handbags and travel pieces for women and men “on the go.” It’s a pretty vague description at this point, but anyone who lusted after Lim’s “I Heart Nueva York” printed T-shirts this season would know that we’re safe to expect great things.

“Since an early age, I’ve been intrigued by the idea of design evolution,” said Lim via Target press release. “One of the reasons I wanted to collaborate with Target is because I felt that together we could create a collection that would inspire – one that is modern and chic, but still very accessible.”

Accessible for the fashion crowd, yes, but prices reportedly top Target’s typical price points. According to the Huffington Post, the 100+ piece collection will range as high as $250-$300 for leather jackets, but hey, they also start at $20. Seems A-ok to us.

Will you be lining up for this collection? Comment below and tell us!

Fall 2013 Shoes Del Pozo

Forget diamonds, everybody knows that shoes are a girl’s best friend. As the Fall 2013 trends begin to emerge, so too do the must-have heels, boots and flats of the season. This round of fashion week has brought with it oodles of new shoe trends to look out for. From strappy suede booties to architectural high heels, the New York, London, Milan and soon-to-be Paris runways are filled with quirky designs that can certainly be the finishing touch on any outfit.

So far, many designers are reinventing old classics and updating them with modern details. Case in point: high-heeled loafers, seen at Mulberry, Rag & Bone and Moschino, which gave a new feminine twist to menswear’s most classic shoe by using fresh yellows, and unexpected patterns. Speaking of unexpected combinations, one of the most unusual footwear trends is the emerging sandal-boot. Open-toe booties are nothing new, but this time designers such as Prada have created a boot customized with cutouts around the sides and front of the shoe.

Sitting in mixed media designer Karim Rashid’s Technicolour boardroom on a grey, drizzly morning is the fashion equivalent of a doppio espresso. The floor is swirled with a kaleidoscope of colours; the shelves are filled with his designs–most of them cartoon-y bright. Next to Mr. Rashid, who’s sporting his signature hot pink hue, I look somewhat less adventurous in my black ensemble. But, there’s just something quintessentially “New York” about a black-on-black look. It’s timeless; it evolves with you. Post-interview (psst, you can read all about our interview in FASHION’s May issue) I hurry over to the Donna Karan show, and almost bump into Broadway star Bernadette Peters with my pink and black polka dot umbrella. The space at Cedar Lake is so dark that show-goers use their iPhones to light the way to their respective seats. The noir theme continues when the show begins–the first 10 looks are all as dark as night, though anything but basic. It’s all about the details: cutouts, texture and sheer inserts. Very urban. Very Donna. Her show notes highlight the power of being a woman “with multiple passions, constantly on the go.” Outerwear, a highlight of the show, is a major developing trend for Fall 2013 (go figure) with so many coat styles to covet that it was hard to narrow them down. Here, however are 5 of the best.

Makeup inspiration at 3.1 Phillip Lim Fall 2013:
“She’s a sophisticated girl. She spends time in the mirror in the morning. She has an edge, she could live uptown and have a downtown boyfriend, or at nighttime be in a rock band.” – Francelle Daly, Nars lead makeup artist.

Get the look:
Daly applied Nars Luminous Moisture Cream and a illuminating foundation for a dewy effect. She also used a peachy highlighter (Nars highlighting blush in “Miss Liberty”) on cheekbones and the bridge of the nose. “It’s a flawless complexion, but it’s effortless.” Daly brushed “Yamal,” a camel shadow, on lids, defined brows with a pencil and curled top and bottom lashes with a clear mascara.

On lips she used Nars lip liner pencil in “Kenya,” a brownish red shade, to trace and fill in the mouth. Then she brushed “Mambo” eyeliner pencil on top to give it “depth and richness.” Read more »
