1990s beauty trend makeup

In case you missed the memo, the 1990s are back in a big way. Minimalist and grunge designs have dominated the catwalk for spring (and fall!) and unsurprisingly this trend has crossed over into beauty as well. 1990s beauty is tricky in that it can easily go from relaxed to messy. 16 things that prove 1990s style really is the biggest trend right now

Comments

As our Spring 2013 fashion and beauty trend reports show, 1990s style is experiencing quite the resurgence right now. Plaids, slip dresses, grown-out roots and faded florals all mark this return to grunge—and where fashion leads, pop culture follows. (Also, the fact that online editor Randi Bergman has been live-tweeting her way through every original 90210 episode on Netflix may have something to do with it…) It’s nearly impossible to visit your favourite website without coming across a ’90s reference, and as such we’ve rounded up 16 of the the best links to prove 1990s style is here to stay—for a season or two, at least.

Today’s retro photo unearthing is worthy of many OMGs! Thanks to Retronaut (our new favourite site, FYI) and photographer Geoff Marchant, we’ve been treated to a look at what Victoria Beckham looked like before she was a Spice Girl/wife of a soccer babe/successful designer/mother of many/super human, and let’s just say they are a trip. Back in 1992—just four years before The Spice Girls released their epic first single “Wannabe”—Victoria Beckham was just Victoria Adams, looking to have some glamour shots taken for her dance and modelling portfolio. Likely inspired by many popular styles of the day, Posh Spice, then 17 indulges in some endearing yet cringe-worthy poses varying from The Flashdance Chair-Crawl, to The Casual Side Boob Flash, to The Glamazon Glove Glance. While there’s so much that has changed about Posh from then to now (you’ll forgive us for not enumerating the speculates), we love this peek at her early years—especially at that amazingly crimped hair.

Katy Perry has Daria nail art! Here are 5 other ’90s icons we’d like to see painted on her nails

Katy Perry Daria Nail Art

Katy Perry was in Tokyo yesterday for the Japanese premiere of her film Part of Me and while there she decided to indulge in some incredible nail art. In a very ’90s nostalgia move, Katy Perry had the faces of nine characters from the cult MTV animated series Daria painted on her nails. This unexpected manicure got us thinking of what other ’90s icons we’d like to see Katy Perry try:

1. The ultimate boy band rivalry: Backstreet Boys on one hand and *NSYNC on the other. Conveniently these groups had five members apiece, so there’s no need to fight over whether Justin or Nick get top placement. Read more »

Nail Corner: How to do the dripping oxblood nail art from Prabal Gurung Spring 2013

Nail Art Prabal Gurung Blood Drip Ox Blood Spring 2013

Oxblood is certainly the colour of the season and from what we’ve seen so far at New York Fashion Week it’s still going strong for Spring 2013. And, like many colour/fashion/beauty trends it’s a shade that’s been in the spotlight before. Deep red lipstick definitely had its moment in the mid-’90s (hello, Drew Barrymore!) and I distinctly remember being obsessed with a special edition bottle of Wet n Wild nail polish that was a rich oxblood shade. The 10 craziest moments from Grimes’ new crazy ass video

Grimes’ epic self-directed video for “Genesis,” the latest single off her critically lauded album Visions, was exactly what you’d expect from the Montreal-based pop star simply because it’s so unexpected. Like the inimitable mélange that goes into her music (Mariah Carey, Drake and Nine Inch Nails are all top influences), this McGill-student-turned-underground-DJ threw everything but the kitchen sink into the five and a half minute long clip. Whether it’s Xena: Princess Warrior nods or echoes of The Spice Girls dancing in the desert for “Say You’ll Be There,” the sheer randomness of the whole video is what makes it work.

We’ve got the scoop and all the looks from Agyness Deyn’s 90s-inspired collection for Dr. Martens

Comments

See the collection! »

Since most of us are still riding the wave of Britannia fanaticism post-London Olympics, news that Brit model Agyness Deyn has teamed up with famed London label Dr. Martens for a capsule collection could not be better timed.

Deyn, who first scored a pair of Dr. Martens boots at the age of 13, has been the face of the brand for the past two years. Her debut 29-piece collection will now have her at the helm of many design collaborations to come (a spring/summer 2013 line is already wrapped up). The collaboration pulls heavily from Deyn’s own signature grungy aesthetic, while also finding inspiration from style icons of the ‘90s.
