The daily steal: Gumball (faux) pearls, $18

I’m a sucker for the classics (my lifelong quest for the ultimate white shirt will surely attest to that), so strands of gleaming pearls are right up my alley. But I’m not ready to look like my grandmother just yet. These oversize beads ($18, at Sears) riff on the country club staple but manage to maintain young and modern–perfect peeking out from a crisp collar.

The daily steal: Rosy hair pins, $16

Photography by Nettika Berthelot

I love vanilla-flavoured cake with butter-cream frosting and pastel-coloured roses made from icing. Sadly, my thighs don’t agree. Meeting me half way are Prismera’s sweet baby pink and butter yellow rose hair clips ($16 each, prismeradesign.com).

While the baby buds don’t actually taste so great (yes, I licked one), they do however, hold my hair back nicely and are easy to style. With the pink one tucked in on one side, and minus the guillotine, I’m channeling Marie Antoinette.

Spring’s best shoes, bags and jewellery in our Accessories Guide

Photography: Bag and shoe by Carlo Mendoza; Jewellery by Christopher Stevenson

Accessories have been big catwalk news for the past few seasons. Think of the giant statement necklaces introduced two years ago, or last fall’s over-the-knee boots. One of this spring’s most talked-about pieces was a pair of alien-like shoes from Alexander McQueen–though to eyes that hadn’t seen them in a while, the season’s clutch of clogs seems just as outrageous. We’re putting the spotlight on spring’s best extras with our debut Accessories Guide. We?ve got a lineup of clutches, clogs and crystal-clear jewellery, plus we talk to industry insiders about fresh trends, names to watch and more.

The daily steal: Denim necklace, $20

The thing about fashion is that the rules are always changing. As Heidi Klum says on Project Runway, “one day you’re in, the next, you’re out.” So I should hardly be surprised when a one-time faux pas is suddenly on point. I’m talking denim on denim. Call me old fashioned, but I just can’t seem to wrap my head around this one. Even seeing some of fashion’s heavy-hitters sporting the look is not enough to tempt me to try it out. But then I came across Aldo’s bold denim necklace ($20, aldoshoes.ca). While I’ll still be participating in the trend, this will be far away enough from my skinnies that I don’t look like a cowgirl.

Montreal: Nicole Richie promotes clothes, thrills fans, at Holt Renfrew

Nicole Richie at Holt Renfrew in Montreal. Photography by George Pimentel

Holt Renfrew was all aflutter last week due to the arrival of L.A. socialite-turned-designer Nicole Richie (and our March cover girl). Though she was an hour late, the crowd of fans and photographers applauded enthusiastically when the petite starlet finally arrived at the Golden Square Mile location, dressed to impress in Beverly Hills boho-style dressed in a black brimmed hat, loose black vest, black opaque tights; black Louboutin shooties (yup, lots of black) and high-waisted, thigh-high blue denim cut-offs. Underneath it all she wore a vintage-inspired silk top from her recently launched clothing label Winter Kate, the raison d’être for her appearance. Richie was also there to debut a footwear range for  her popular accessories label House of Harlow 1960. Read the rest of this entry »

Shopping for accessories just got twice as nice! Though the program isn’t new, I’ve just found out that when you buy one accessory at Reitmans (reitmans.com), you get a second free! Whether you take advantage of the deal to layer up your necklaces or go the gift-giving route, this was one tip too good not to share.

7 bags you can take through airport security

feb09carryon7_lg

It’s a pretty confusing time to be travelling right now, what with airport security regulations changing on a fairly regular basis. Here’s some recent bad news: If you’re flying into the U.S. (or are connecting through the U.S.), you’re not allowed to take any carry-on baggage. [Update: As of January 20, you are now allowed one piece of carry-on baggage in addition to your small purse. The carry-on can be up to 23x40x55 cm.]

The sort-of good news: You can still take a small purse. Specifically, a purse no larger that 25×30x14 cm. Does that sound small? It is–just slightly larger than your average magazine. This leaves out a host of classics–the YSL Tribute, the Birkin (unless it’s the 25 cm “baby”), the Marc Jacobs Stam bag–or anything else with a decent amount of space. (Our sources tell us that they’re not exactly whipping out the a tape measure at check-in, so you can probably cheat a centimetre or two.) Bottom line: If you think you’re pushing it, size-wise, with your bag, call your airline to confirm, or just leave it at home. You do not want to risk having to check a Birkin.

But let’s think positive. It’s a chance to minimize. There are plenty of stylishly-small handbags (see below), and no matter your destination, you’re still able to bring toiletries and the now familiar 1-litre Ziploc bag filled with your 100-ml gels and liquids. Knowing that space is at a premium, we spoke to our beauty director and frequent-flyer champ, Adriana Ermter, about the products she travels with.

On her “must-have or die” list:

  • Polysporin Lip Therapy
  • A mini toothpaste, toothbrush and floss
  • Rimmel Extra Super Lash Mascara in “Black”
  • Chanel Aqualumière Sheer Colour Lipshine in “Montego”
  • Chloé pocket-sized perfume spray
  • Compact and mirror
  • Mason Pearson brush
  • Antiperspirant stick
  • Kinerase Lotion
  • For overnight flights, if you have space:

  • Two or three of the La Roche-Posay Toleriane individual Eye Make-up Removers for sensitive eyes
  • Nivea Q-10 Plus Wrinkle Reducer Eye Cream
  • La Prairie Cellular Night Repair Cream

The daily steal: Metallic coin purse, $5

    FMsteal1209shiney_lg
Whether you’re buying a Starbucks non-fat latte or feeding a parking meter, nothing adds a touch of luxe to everyday living like a shiny coin purse. This holiday season, I’ll be filling the stockings of my nearest and dearest with these colourful confections from Old Navy ($5 each, visit oldnavy.ca). Best of all, candy-foil metallics continue to sweeten the style scene this spring. So consider them the gift that keeps on giving.

Montreal: Shopping up-and-coming names at the Smart Design Mart

    nov09smart2_lg

Last weekend saw the first-ever Smart Design Mart (smartdesignmart.com) unfold in a building on Casgrain Street in Mile End. The fashion, art and design event “was put together in one month,” says Angie Johnson who, along with her B.F. and business partner, Tyson Bodnarchuk–they are the duo behind Headquarters Galerie + Boutique–hooked up with five like-minded pals to organize a gathering of 50-plus exhibitors. Said Johnson, “Nobody needed another arts and crafts fair. Our idea was to put together a mini-boutique.”
